Steam’s October 7, 2026 Client Beta makes Windows programs added as non-Steam entries use Proton by default on SteamOS and Linux. That removes a manual compatibility-tool selection step; it does not guarantee that a particular game or app will work.

What changed in the October 7 Beta

The Steam Client Beta notes say, “Windows binaries registered as non-steam games will now run in Proton by default.” The wording is reproduced in GamingOnLinux’s October 8 report, which links to the official October 7 Steam news page.

In practical terms, when a Windows executable is registered in Steam as a non-Steam game, the Beta selects Proton automatically instead of requiring you to choose a compatibility tool first. This is a default-selection change, not a change to the program itself or a promise of better performance or broader compatibility.

The notes also list separate fixes for non-Steam games that failed to launch after their Target binary was changed with Browse, and for the Stop button failing to close a game launched by an external tool. Those fixes are distinct from the Proton default.

How to run a Windows game or app through Steam

Add the Windows executable as a non-Steam entry in the Steam client on SteamOS or Linux. In this Beta, Steam uses Proton by default for that registered Windows binary. The update removes the compatibility-tool selection step; it does not make every launcher or app work, and individual setup details can depend on the program.

Steam Deck is one SteamOS device where the change is relevant, but the behavior is not limited to Deck: desktop Linux users running the Steam client can benefit too. No new hardware is required.

What Proton does—and what the default does not mean

Valve describes Proton as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” It is a Steam-integrated compatibility tool based on Wine, not a native Linux version of an application. Valve’s Proton repository says most users should use the version shipped by Steam.

Choosing Proton automatically only determines the compatibility path Steam will try. It does not establish that the executable will launch correctly, that all its features will work, or that its publisher supports running it this way. DRM, anti-cheat, dependencies, and other program-specific behavior can affect results. Valve’s 2018 Steam Play announcement noted that some games with complex DRM or anti-cheat could be difficult or impossible to support; that is a general caveat, not a claim that every such game fails.

Steam’s Linux games page likewise says Steam Play can potentially allow Windows-only games to work on Linux. “Potentially” matters: the automatic default is not a compatibility guarantee.

Which launch path applies?

What you add or select Launch path What the Beta changes
Windows binary registered as a non-Steam game Proton compatibility path Proton is selected by default in the October 7 Client Beta.
Program with a native Linux build Native Linux path This non-Steam Windows-binary default does not apply to the native executable.
Entry for which you manually choose a compatibility tool The tool you select The Beta change concerns the default for registered Windows binaries; manual selection remains a separate setup choice.

Valve’s earlier Steam Play work described Proton’s initial design as including Wine modifications, graphics translation, and Steam integration. That is historical context from 2018, not a current inventory of Proton components or a performance comparison.

Why this is a useful but small update

For people who use Steam as a launcher for external games or apps, automatic Proton selection removes a bit of setup friction, especially when launching a non-Steam entry in SteamOS Gaming Mode. A prior Beta change made the compatibility-tool selector consistently visible and put the recommended choice at the top as “Default”; the October 7 change is separate, setting Proton automatically for registered Windows binaries.

The update changes which tool Steam tries by default. It does not establish a success rate for Windows apps, measure a performance improvement, or mean that every Windows program is supported.
