Before buying a festive-sale bargain, verify the seller and the offer, compare the full cost and return terms, and choose a payment method that gives you a route to challenge a problem. At checkout, share only necessary information; after ordering, verify delivery alerts independently and keep your records. These seven checks help you avoid common scams and respond quickly if an order goes wrong.
Before you order
1. Verify the shop and the link
If you have not bought from a seller before, look for independent reviews and search its name and web address with terms such as “review,” “complaint” or “scam.” Compare the address carefully: misspellings, lookalike domains, copied branding, unusually urgent language and prices that seem implausibly low are reasons to stop and check further. Social-media ads can impersonate real retailers, so do not treat a familiar logo as proof that the seller is genuine. The FTC’s November 2025 holiday-scam alert recommends checking sellers and offers independently.
HTTPS means the connection is encrypted; it does not certify the retailer. As the FTC explains, “Scammers know that they can create encrypted sites, too.” If an email, text or ad link seems questionable, do not follow it. Type the retailer’s known web address yourself or find its official site through a trusted route. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) puts it plainly: “If you’re unsure about a link you receive, don’t click on it.” See its shopping and payment guidance.
2. Read the whole deal, not just the headline price
Compare the all-in price, including shipping, handling, taxes and other fees. Check the exact product description and, where relevant, the manufacturer and model: a low price may be for a different version, condition or bundle than you expect. A promotion may also require buying something else. The FTC’s online-shopping advice recommends comparing product details and shipping costs rather than relying on the headline price alone.

Before paying, read the return terms for that specific item. Note the return deadline, who pays return postage, whether there is a restocking charge, and whether sale or clearance goods have different conditions. Check the promised delivery date too, especially if you need the item by a particular occasion.
At checkout
3. Choose a payment method with a route to recourse
When available, the FTC and UK NCSC recommend considering a credit card for online shopping. Depending on your country, card issuer and circumstances, you may be able to dispute a charge if an order never arrives, is incorrect or damaged, or you are charged twice. Do not assume every card, payment service or transaction has the same protection: check the provider’s terms and act promptly if there is a problem.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
A seller insisting on gift cards, wire or direct bank transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency is a serious warning sign. These methods can be difficult to reverse or dispute. The FTC’s US-specific advice on paying and resolving purchase problems is available in its online-shopping guidance; UK shoppers can consult the NCSC’s guidance. Legal rights and provider processes differ by jurisdiction.
4. Minimize the information you share
Provide only the details required to complete the purchase. Use guest checkout when practical, and avoid saving card or bank information with a seller you do not know. Before creating an account or supplying optional personal details, read the site’s privacy information and decide whether the extra data is necessary. These practices limit the information exposed if an account or retailer is compromised; the NCSC covers checkout data in its online-shopping guidance.

5. Secure accounts connected to shopping
Use a unique, strong password for each shopping, email, banking and payment account, and enable two-step verification on important accounts where available. Reusing a password creates a chain of risk: if it is exposed at one shop, someone may try it on your email or financial accounts. A password manager can help you keep distinct passwords, but it is optional; the NCSC’s guidance focuses on unique passwords and two-step verification.
6. Verify delivery alerts before acting
Unexpected messages claiming a delivery was missed, an address is wrong or an extra fee is due can lead to fake payment pages or credential-stealing sites. Do not click the message link or provide personal or payment information there. Check the order directly through the retailer’s or carrier’s official website or contact details, using information you already trust rather than details in the alert. The NCSC advises against clicking links when you are unsure of their legitimacy.

7. Keep evidence and move quickly if something goes wrong
Keep the seller’s name and web address, the item description, order date and price, promised delivery date, return terms, confirmation and any messages. Save screenshots or copies where useful. If the purchase fails, contact the seller first and keep a record of that contact. If the issue remains unresolved, promptly contact your card issuer or payment provider to ask what dispute options apply.

The UK context matters for a seasonal figure: in a notice dated 17 November 2025, the NCSC attributed £11.8 million in online-shopping fraud losses to City of London Police for the festive shopping period from 1 November 2024 to 31 January 2025. That is a UK figure for that specified period, not a global total or a general annual rate. The notice is available from the NCSC.
