Undead Labs head Philip Holt says “several thousand people” still come to State of Decay each day. That is his estimate from an October 6, 2026 interview—not a published count of concurrent players or daily active accounts—and he credits Game Pass with helping the franchise reach a large audience.
What does “several thousand people a day” mean?
Holt told The Game Business: “Even today, we have several thousand people coming through the door every day.” The interview does not define “people” or explain how the daily figure was measured. It should therefore be read as Holt’s description of ongoing arrivals, not as an audited figure for concurrent players, unique accounts, or sessions.

The interview provides no underlying dataset, counting method, or independent verification. It gives a useful indication that people continue to enter the game, but it cannot establish a precise current player count.
How does Game Pass fit into State of Decay’s audience?
Holt said the State of Decay franchise had reached 25 million players with help from the Game Pass audience. That is a cumulative reach claim, not a sales total and not a count of people currently playing. It also covers the franchise, whereas his “several thousand” remark describes daily arrivals to State of Decay; the two figures measure different things and should not be compared as if they were equivalent.

How many players stick around?
Holt described State of Decay as “a very retentive game,” while acknowledging that many Game Pass players try it and leave: “A lot of players from Game Pass come in and they’re like ‘this isn’t for me’ and leave.” He said that among players the studio captures, “we capture for a long time.”
To illustrate that, he recalled that something like half of monthly active users had been in the game close to two years, and about a quarter for more than five years. He framed those numbers as approximate recollections—“last time I looked”—rather than figures from a published retention report. The interview supplies neither cohort data nor an exact churn rate, so it does not show how many people from any particular group remain active over time.

What does this mean for State of Decay 3?
In the same October 6, 2026 interview, Holt said State of Decay 3 was in alpha, with a release planned for the following year, and that the plan was to launch day one on Game Pass. He also described building a four-player co-op shared world as the project’s largest investment. These are plans and development details stated at that time, not guarantees about the final release or schedule.

The interview reports that Undead Labs’ employees bought the company after Microsoft sought a buyer, and that State of Decay 3 had a new publisher whose name was not disclosed. It also recounts the studio’s history of 38 updates to State of Decay 2 during its eight years as an Xbox studio, with the most recent update in November 2024. That record is retrospective context, not a promise of future support.
