State of Decay 3 is still in development. Undead Labs said on September 22, 2026, that the game was in alpha and remained targeted for 2027; it has not announced a specific release date. Until then, State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is the available option for its community-survival gameplay, four-player co-op, and included Heartland and Daybreak modes.

When is State of Decay 3 coming out?
Undead Labs’ latest stated target is 2027. In its September 22, 2026 announcement, the studio said development remained active, the game was in alpha, and it was continuing toward a previously announced closed-beta milestone before the end of 2026. The studio has not given a specific launch day or month, so 2027 is a target, not a confirmed release date. Undead Labs’ announcement also says the studio became independent and employee-owned; it reiterated the game’s Xbox, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation plans.

Can you sign up for a beta?
Xbox Wire reported on August 26, 2026, that closed beta playtests were planned before the end of that year and that registration was open for a chance to be selected. Registration does not guarantee an invitation. The article refers to feedback from alpha testers, but that is not a promise that the game is publicly playable or that every registrant will get access. Check the Xbox Wire playtest announcement for the latest participation details.

What has been announced about State of Decay 3?
The details below describe the developers’ announced design, not a final feature checklist. Because the game is still in alpha, features, platforms, and timing can change before release.
Solo play and shared-world co-op
State of Decay 3 is planned to support solo play and shared-world co-op for up to four players. The developers say players sharing a save can make progress asynchronously, build facilities, and develop as many as three bases. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt summarized the shared-world idea this way: “In a shared world, any one of us can make changes to the world.” Xbox Wire’s June 2026 interview describes these plans.

A larger playable space, compared with one map
Patzelt said the playable space for an individual player is “about 4 times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map.” That comparison is to one map, not to the total area of State of Decay 2. It is a developer-provided description, not an independently measured area.

Enclaves, Plague Nests, and scavenging
Enclaves are NPC survivor groups that players can work with, befriend, ally with, and recruit. Plague Nests are described as dynamic hubs for enemy encounters that respond to player actions and may behave differently between runs. The announced design also emphasizes scavenging, altered weapons, and a risk-and-reward loop in which dangerous Plague Nest areas can offer better loot.

Combat and platforms
The announced combat system adds a second melee-attack button compared with State of Decay 2. For access, Xbox and Undead Labs have listed Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5 in official material; Xbox Wire has also listed cloud, Steam, and Game Pass. The Xbox product page lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 and says day-one Game Pass availability is planned. These are current plans, not a guarantee that every platform or storefront will launch simultaneously. Recheck the Xbox listing and Undead Labs announcement as launch approaches.
What can you play in State of Decay 2 now?
State of Decay 2 originally released in 2018; Undead Labs says it was remastered as State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition in 2020. The official page describes a survival loop built around scavenging, recruiting survivors, managing a community, and fighting with melee and ranged weapons while dealing with Blood Plague threats. Four-player co-op
Friends can join a player’s community for scavenging and combat, with up to four players in co-op. That is a useful option if you want to play together now; State of Decay 3’s announced shared-world approach is different because the developers describe players making changes to a shared save and progressing asynchronously.
Heartland and Daybreak
- Heartland: A story-driven return to Trumbull Valley.
- Daybreak: A four-player mode focused on surviving waves.
Both modes are included in Juggernaut Edition, according to the official game page.

Which game should you choose?
- Choose State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition now if you want to play the existing community-survival loop, explore multiple maps, or try Heartland and Daybreak with friends.
- Wait for State of Decay 3 if the announced shared-save co-op, larger playable space, up-to-three-base development, or evolving Plague Nests are the features you most want. Those are plans still in development, not features you can play today.
