State of Decay 2: keep a community alive
State of Decay 2 centers on the people in your survivor community. You scavenge for supplies, maintain shelters, make choices about survivors, and navigate relationships with neighboring groups. State of Decay 2 is the more straightforward choice if your group wants to join a shared session and take on survival tasks together. Its co-op supports four players total. The host’s connection matters because multiplayer is peer-to-peer, and guests are tethered to the host, so they need to stay nearby rather than roam freely across the map. The official support FAQ says cross-play works across platforms and storefronts through Xbox accounts; Steam also lists cross-platform multiplayer and the Xbox Live account requirement on its store page.

Confirm the exact DayZ platform pairing
DayZ’s FAQ describes separate PC and console server pools and says cross-platform play is unlikely, but the FAQ was posted in 2018. Treat it as dated guidance, not a guarantee about today’s compatibility. Before purchasing, check current platform documentation for the specific devices your group uses and confirm that you can join the same server pool.
Which game should you choose?
- Pick State of Decay 2 if you want concrete community and base-management goals, a roster of survivors to maintain, and co-op with a clear four-player limit.
- Pick DayZ if you prefer a less guided open world, environmental survival, and the possibility that an encounter with another player could turn helpful or hostile.
- For cross-platform groups, lean toward State of Decay 2 when the official cross-play information is decisive. For DayZ, verify compatibility for the precise platform pair rather than relying on the older FAQ alone.
- If PC modding is a deciding factor, consider DayZ: its FAQ explicitly identifies official mod support on PC. It does not establish the same support for consoles.

For DayZ, Bohemia Interactive’s May 27, 2024 Update 1.25 announcement says the update arrived on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation and that Livonia became included with the base game from that point forward. Store packaging and regional pricing can change, so verify the current listing in your region rather than relying on older DLC or price information.
