The headline describes a dated network milestone, not Starlink’s current laser count or the speed available to an individual customer. A NASA Langley Research Center presentation dated April 1, 2025, reported more than 9,000 lasercom terminals in orbit, more than 250,000 acquisitions per day and more than 42 petabytes of daily traffic over Starlink’s laser links. The traffic figure is the total carried across the orbital network.

What does “42 petabytes per day” mean?

It is an aggregate measure of data carried over Starlink’s optical inter-satellite links in a day, according to NASA Langley’s April 1, 2025 presentation. It does not mean one satellite, one laser or one household transmits 42 petabytes. Many links and routes contribute to the network-wide total.

The same presentation reported more than 250,000 acquisitions per day. An acquisition is a link-establishment event; that daily event count is not the number of links operating at once. Nor should it be read as 250,000 distinct satellite pairs: a link may be acquired again as satellites move and network connections change.

How Starlink’s laser links carry traffic

These lasers connect satellites to other satellites, rather than beaming the customer’s internet connection directly to a Starlink dish. A user terminal communicates with a satellite over radio; optical links can then pass traffic between spacecraft before it reaches a suitable ground connection or continues along another route.

Optical communications use infrared light. NASA explains that an optical link can carry more data than a traditional radio-frequency link. Starlink describes its system as a dynamic mesh: satellites can route traffic through other spacecraft, rather than relying on a single fixed path through space.

Starlink’s 2025 report says each satellite’s optical links can relay hundreds of gigabits directly to other satellites. That is a capability description, not a stated per-link speed for every operating connection. It is also distinct from the 42-petabyte daily total, which aggregates traffic across the mesh.

How the reported counts changed

The figures use different terms and come from different dates. “Terminals,” “bidirectional links” and “lasers” are not interchangeable units, so the reports show milestones rather than a like-for-like inventory series.

Report and date Reported figure What it describes
NASA Langley Research Center presentation, April 1, 2025 More than 9,000 lasercom terminals in orbit; more than 250,000 acquisitions per day; more than 42 petabytes per day A dated snapshot of terminals, daily link-acquisition events and aggregate laser-network traffic.
Starlink Progress Report, 2024 More than 13,000 bidirectional laser links The report’s count of bidirectional links, not a directly comparable terminal count.
SpaceX EU Prospectus, June 5, 2026 More than 23,000 inter-satellite lasers A later company-reported laser count; it is not a current live inventory figure.

These reports establish that the network expanded beyond the earlier 9,000-terminal milestone. They do not establish an exact present-day count: the latest figure here is the prospectus’s “more than 23,000” statement dated June 5, 2026.

Do the lasers make Starlink faster for each customer?

Not by turning the 42-petabyte total into a per-user allowance or speed. That number is traffic carried by the whole mesh. A customer’s experience also depends on the radio connection to the satellite, network capacity and conditions along the route; the aggregate daily total alone cannot say what speed an individual will receive.

Starlink’s 2024 progress report also cited 26 ms latency and approximately 100 Mbps download speeds across the network. Those are network-level figures as presented in that report, not a measurement of the laser links alone or a guarantee for every customer. They should not be confused with NASA’s separate optical demonstration: in 2024, NASA’s TBIRD experiment transmitted 4.8 terabytes in five minutes at 200 Gbps. TBIRD is an example of optical communications capability, not a Starlink performance test.

Why route traffic between satellites?

Inter-satellite links let traffic travel through orbit before reaching a ground gateway. That can give the network alternative paths and reduce dependence on a particular gateway for a route. Starlink and SpaceX describe this as dynamic routing through a mesh, including the ability to reroute traffic. It does not mean every connection avoids ground infrastructure or that a laser link guarantees uninterrupted service.

What is SpaceX’s Plaser opportunity?

SpaceX’s June 2026 prospectus says excess capacity in the network is selectively monetized through its Plaser program, describing an opportunity to relay traffic for third-party satellites. That makes the laser mesh relevant beyond Starlink’s own broadband service: other spacecraft could potentially use available optical-relay capacity. The prospectus describes a commercial opportunity, not a universal service available to any satellite operator on identical terms.
