Starlink service was mostly restored about 2.5 hours after a major international outage on July 24, 2025. The company attributed the disruption to failures in internal software services that operate its core network. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Starlink engineering leadership apologized publicly.
What happened during the Starlink outage?
Reports of problems began around 3 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, July 24, 2025, according to Downdetector reporting summarized by Al Jazeera. The disruption affected users internationally. The Guardian described it as one of Starlink’s biggest international outages, with tens of thousands of people knocked offline.
Downdetector recorded as many as 61,000 reports. That is a crowdsourced count of people reporting problems, not a verified tally of customers who lost service. At the time, Al Jazeera reported that Starlink had more than six million users in roughly 140 countries and territories. Bloomberg Law described the network as comprising roughly 8,000 satellites and serving millions of subscribers.
What caused Starlink to go down?
Starlink vice president of engineering Michael Nicolls said the outage was caused by a “failure of key internal software services that operate the core network.” That is the company’s stated explanation; available reporting does not identify a specific software bug or establish a satellite hardware failure or cyberattack as the cause.

Nicolls said Starlink would investigate the root cause and work to prevent a recurrence. The public statements described that commitment, but did not establish that a permanent fix had been completed.
How long did the outage last, and is Starlink back online?
Service mostly resumed after about 2.5 hours, according to reporting by Al Jazeera and Reuters. On July 24, Starlink’s official account posted: “The network issue has been resolved, and Starlink service has been restored.” That confirmed the company’s restoration announcement, though it does not guarantee that every user’s local connection or equipment was working normally.

What should you check if your Starlink is still offline?
A broad provider outage and a problem with an individual setup are different issues. After Starlink announces restoration, a remaining connection problem may involve local power, the terminal, router, or cabling; the outage reports alone cannot diagnose an individual installation.
