India’s communications minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the government wants consumers to be able to choose among connectivity options—including satellite internet—based on availability and price. That is a policy position, not confirmation that Starlink or another satellite provider is already open for subscriptions. The latest reported status, dated October 8, 2026, said security assessments were still underway for three licensed operators and none had fully begun commercial service.
What Scindia said about customer choice
In an April 8, 2025 interview with The New Indian Express, Scindia described satellite connectivity as one option alongside mobile networks and fibre broadband. He said customers should be able to choose according to what is available to them and what it costs.
“My job is to provide this bouquet of options to ensure that every consumer has the opportunity to choose.”

He framed satellite as a complement to existing networks, particularly for places conventional mobile towers and fibre cannot readily reach, and for situations such as natural disasters. His remarks described the government’s aim, subject to regulatory requirements; they did not announce that any provider had started retail service.

In a June 23, 2025 interview published by Rediff from Business Standard, Scindia reiterated that customers have a right to choose a service and characterized satellite as complementary to terrestrial communications. He said the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would study the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s recommendations and spectrum would be assigned administratively. Read the Rediff interview.
In a July 2, 2025 interview with CNN-News18, reported by Moneycontrol, he called satellite a necessary addition to communication options and cited remote, hilly, and disaster-hit areas as relevant use cases. Can customers choose a satellite provider in India now?
Not on the basis of the latest reported status. Mint reported on October 8, 2026 that security assessments were underway for all three satellite communications licensees and that none had fully switched on commercial service. The report said a licensee could proceed to seek spectrum assignment after its assessment was complete. Read Mint’s October 8, 2026 report.

The operators identified in that report were Starlink, Jio Satellite Communications, and Eutelsat OneWeb. A licence or regulatory assessment is not the same as a service that consumers can order: the report did not provide a definitive launch date or a comparison of retail plans.

As historical context, a Starlink business operations executive said in December 2025 that the India website was not live, India customer pricing had not been announced, and the company was not taking customer orders there at that time. What has to happen before service can begin?
The reported process is not complete simply because an operator holds a licence. According to Mint’s October 8, 2026 account, the security assessment for each licensee was still underway; once the relevant assessment is complete, that licensee can proceed to seek spectrum assignment. The report did not establish when assessments or spectrum assignment would finish, or when retail service would start.

Scindia had said in June 2025 that DoT would study TRAI’s recommendations and that spectrum would be assigned administratively. Those remarks provide context on the government’s stated approach, but are not a timetable or evidence that every approval has been completed.

Satellite can potentially extend connectivity to locations where deploying fibre or mobile towers is difficult, including remote and hilly areas. Scindia also cited disaster situations, when terrestrial networks may be unavailable or disrupted. In his framing, satellite adds another way to connect; it is not a claim that satellite replaces mobile or fibre service everywhere.

Whether a satellite option would suit a particular customer depends on local availability and the actual offer. If services become available, useful comparison points include coverage at the intended location, equipment and installation costs, monthly price and data allowance, performance and latency, reliability in adverse weather or emergencies, support and contract terms, and whether the service is fixed-location or mobile. These are questions to check against real provider plans, not established features of current Indian retail offers.
What is known—and not known—about pricing
As of Mint’s October 8, 2026 status report, the retrieved reporting did not establish consumer launch dates or current retail plan prices for the three operators. Scindia’s April 2025 interview cited ₹9.06 per GB for data in India and a stated global average of $2.59 per GB, along with figures for mobile, internet, and broadband users. These were figures he gave in that interview, not independently validated current market data, and they do not establish what satellite service will cost.
