STRK rose 19.2% in a reported 24-hour market snapshot after Starknet said it was actively considering a move from Ethereum Layer 2 to Layer 1. The project tied the possibility to a goal of becoming quantum-resistant by 2027, but it did not announce a decision or a migration plan. Starknet’s official FAQ still describes the network as an Ethereum L2 validity rollup.
What happened to STRK?
The Crypto Times reported that STRK gained 19.2% over 24 hours to $0.05871, citing CoinGecko data captured on October 8, 2026, at 19:15 UTC. The figures below are that dated snapshot, not live market quotes.

These figures are attributed to CoinGecko as reported by The Crypto Times. The report links the rise in time with Starknet’s statement, but that timing alone does not establish the statement as the sole cause of the price move.

Did Starknet decide to become an L1?
No. In an October 8, 2026, X post reproduced by The Crypto Times, Starknet said: “We are actively considering becoming an L1. This would enable Starknet to become the first fully quantum-resistant network, with 2027 as our target.” The wording describes a possibility under consideration, not a finalized transition. The reports do not set out a detailed implementation plan.

The claim to be the “first fully quantum-resistant network” is Starknet’s stated ambition, not an independently verified result. The 2027 date is its target, not a validated forecast.
Why is Starknet considering an L1 transition?
The public rationale centers on post-quantum security and control over upgrade timing. Crypto Briefing reported that StarkWare co-founder and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson raised the question of whether becoming an L1 would help Starknet pursue post-quantum agility. His October 8 post framed it as an open question: “Starknet becoming an L1 for post-quantum agility: good idea or bad idea?”

The Crypto Times summarized StarkWare’s June 30 post-quantum roadmap as describing Starknet’s STARK proofs as relying on collision-resistant hash functions rather than elliptic-curve arithmetic, alongside plans around cryptographic agility and account abstraction. That technical rationale does not establish that every network layer, application, wallet, or account is already quantum-resistant. The cited coverage also does not quantify when quantum computers might threaten cryptography or the probability of such a break.
What Starknet is today
Starknet’s official FAQ describes it as a permissionless, decentralized Ethereum Layer 2 validity rollup intended to scale Ethereum while retaining Ethereum’s security and decentralization. The network uses Ethereum for settlement and data availability.

The same FAQ lists STRK’s roles as paying transaction fees, participating in governance, and staking within a proof-of-stake model. Those are described network functions; they do not establish a price outlook.
How an L1 proposal could change the network’s direction
Starknet’s decentralization roadmap describes a current direction of serving as an L2 for both Ethereum and Bitcoin while pursuing decentralization. It mentions additional validator responsibilities, a distributed sequencer layer, S-two proving service work, and Cairo Native. These are roadmap plans or implementation directions, not evidence that every component is complete.

The roadmap also lists Bitcoin-related integrations and products: Lightning Network payments with Braavos wallet, Xverse wallet integration, Atomiq cross-chain conversion, and a federated Runes bridge. They provide context for the project’s broader strategy, but do not explain the specific STRK price movement.
