The game behind the “Firefly Meets Red Dead Redemption” headline is Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world space western starring scoundrel Kay Vess. PlayStation listed the PS5 game in its May 2026 Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members; that was a dated catalog addition, not a promise of permanent or free-to-own access. Check your regional PlayStation Store for its current availability and membership requirements.
What is Star Wars Outlaws?
Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world Star Wars adventure built around an outlaw story. PlayStation describes it as a “space western,” with cantinas, speeder travel, space combat, alien gangs and sarcastic droids. Its premise centers on a criminal underworld rather than a conventional Jedi-led quest: Kay Vess, a young scoundrel, puts together a crew for a heist while trying to escape a crime syndicate, according to the article that carried the headline.

PlayStation Blog Contributor Corey Brotherson characterized the setting this way in a May 22, 2026 feature: “The galaxy far, far away lends itself perfectly to an open-world adventure, and Ubisoft’s space western captures the look, feel and sheer sense of style that we love Star Wars for.” Read the PlayStation Blog feature.

What the Firefly and Red Dead Redemption comparison does—and does not—mean
“Firefly Meets Red Dead Redemption” is a useful shorthand for the headline’s proposed mix: a space-western atmosphere alongside an open-world outlaw fantasy. It is an editorial comparison, not evidence that either Firefly or Red Dead Redemption 2 directly inspired the game.

The available official description supports the broad space-western and open-world framing, but does not establish detailed gameplay parallels with either reference. The comparison should not be taken to mean the games share particular mechanics, story structures or character dynamics.
Was Star Wars Outlaws a PlayStation Plus freebie?
It was listed as a PS5 Game Catalog title for Extra and Premium members in May 2026. PlayStation’s May 15 podcast listing named the game, and a May 22 open-world feature said it was available starting that day. The feature notes that the Game Catalog requires Extra and Premium/Deluxe membership and that lineups may vary by region. PlayStation also warns that PSN release dates can change. “Freebie” is headline language for access through a qualifying subscription, not a free-to-own copy. Catalog membership does not establish that the game remains available now: check the PlayStation Store for your country before subscribing or planning a download. PlayStation’s own access note says: “PlayStation Plus Game Catalog is available with Extra and Premium/Deluxe memberships. Lineups may differ by region. Please check the PlayStation Store.”

How was the game described by the headline article?
The article result surfaced under a Screen Rant attribution reported an 8/10 score from reviewer Glenn Bunn. That is one reviewer’s score, with no year stated in the search result; it is not an aggregate rating or a measure of consensus. The word “underrated” in the headline is likewise an evaluative judgment, not a quantified finding.
