A maker has built an autonomous, 3D-printed Star Wars mouse droid with lights, sound, collision avoidance and a party mode. The “rebel rave machine” is a fan project inspired by Sabine Wren—not an official Star Wars product.
What is the Rebel rave machine?
Make: featured the project on September 23, 2026, describing the creative premise as “What if Sabine Wren adopted a mouse droid?” Cass, the maker behind Chaos Theory, designed a customized droid that can move autonomously and switch into a mode with lights and music. The project identifies itself as a fan creation and says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Disney or Lucasfilm. Make:’s feature and the Arduino Project Hub guide document the build.
How the droid works
The design combines a small rover platform with sensors and sound-and-light components. Its Arduino UNO Rev3 runs the control logic, while an L298N motor driver operates the two motors. An HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor helps the droid detect obstacles; a DFPlayer Mini MP3 module and speaker handle audio, and red LEDs provide lighting. A 7.4V lithium battery pack supplies power, with a buck converter providing 5V for components that need it. These are features described by the project, not independently measured performance results.

The guide describes autonomous movement and collision avoidance, as well as a panic mode and a party mode. The Arduino coordinates the behavior; the motor driver, sensor, LEDs and audio module carry out the corresponding actions. The sources do not publish speed, runtime, sensing range or other performance figures, so those should not be inferred from the feature list.

What is custom about the chassis?
The shell and much of the chassis are custom-designed and 3D-printed. Cass told Make: that an existing flat metal Mecanum chassis served as a sturdy mounting point for the motors during development. She said a possible version two might remove that support and mount the motors directly with brackets and heat-set inserts. Designing the parts herself, she explained, also lets other makers print the files rather than having to find and adapt a particular RC car platform. Make:’s account of the design gives more detail.
What does it take to build one?
The Arduino Project Hub page is the practical starting point: it contains the project’s component list and build instructions. Its listed materials include the Uno Rev3, HC-SR04 sensor, DFPlayer Mini, motor driver, switches, battery, LEDs, small fasteners, a 3D printer, soldering equipment and hand tools. Check the guide for the complete bill of materials and assembly details before buying or substituting parts; similar-looking components are not necessarily electrically or mechanically compatible.

- Printing: You need access to a 3D printer to make the custom body and chassis parts.
- Electronics assembly: The build uses soldering and hand tools, in addition to its control board, motors, sensor, sound module and lights.
- Compatibility: Confirm voltage, wiring, mounting dimensions and other requirements against the guide before choosing alternatives.
The published material does not establish a total build cost or compare this design with other chassis or control approaches.
Can you reuse the files?
The project guide lists different licenses for the original code and the 3D files: MIT for the code and CC BY-NC 4.0 for the printable files. Those terms are not interchangeable; consult the guide’s current license text to understand the permissions and conditions for each. The guide also says its fan-project files do not grant rights to third-party Star Wars intellectual property. Check the Arduino Project Hub page for the files and license details.

Why this build stands out
The appeal is the combination of a recognizable fictional droid shape with a functional maker build: a custom printed chassis, autonomous rover behavior, obstacle sensing and a sound-and-light party mode. Its “rebel rave machine” label is a playful description of that party feature, not a product name or an official Star Wars release. The documented design is a specific project, not a tested comparison of competing droid kits.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Sphere to Battle Stance: The signature folding mechanism curls Droideka into a compact ball and deploys it into full combat position, exactly as the destroyer droid moves on screen
- Dual Launch Action: Two launch modes send it rolling before it snaps open, and the twin blaster arms deploy independently - kinetic engineering rarely found in wooden model kits
- Light Up Cable Effect: A glowing power line links the engines for display after dark - batteries required, not included. Spare parts come in the box in case a piece breaks
- A Focused Six Hour Build: Official assembly time is 360 minutes at complexity 3 of 5. QR code video guides cover the trickiest steps, and a little candle wax keeps the transformation smooth
- A Gift That Moves: Officially licensed, movie accurate and ready for Christmas, a birthday or Father's Day - pair it with UGEARS R2-D2, TIE Fighter or Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars collection
