For the major story-led Star Wars games covered here, play Knights of the Old Republic first, then Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor, Squadrons, and the single-player campaign in Battlefront II. This is in-universe story order, not release order. It is a curated timeline, not a complete chronology of every Star Wars game.

What order should I play the Star Wars games in?

The timeline moves from the ancient Old Republic setting into the Empire and then the later Galactic Civil War. The order is approximate where official descriptions give only a broad era rather than an exact year.

Order Game Story placement Story connection and format
1 Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Ancient Old Republic, roughly 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire. Role-playing story with player-directed Jedi or dark-side choices. Its placement relative to every other Old Republic game is not established by the cited official page.
2 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Reign of the Empire, after Order 66. Single-player action-adventure about Padawan Cal Kestis, a survivor of the purge pursued by Imperial Inquisitors.
3 Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Five years after Fallen Order, still in the Reign of the Empire. Direct continuation of Cal Kestis’s story.
4 Star Wars: Squadrons Near the end of the Galactic Civil War, in the Age of the Rebellion; no precise in-universe year is supplied on its official page. Self-contained single-player starfighter campaign, alongside multiplayer dogfights.
5 Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017), single-player campaign A long arc across roughly 30 years, around the destruction of the second Death Star and onward toward the period of The Force Awakens. Follow the campaign as a story spanning time, not as a single timeline point. Its multiplayer battles feature three eras but are not the campaign’s narrative order.

Where each game fits in the timeline

1. Knights of the Old Republic: the ancient setting

Knights of the Old Republic opens the list because its setting is far earlier than the films’ central conflicts: StarWars.com places it about 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire, in a period when hundreds of Jedi have fallen in battle against the Sith. Your choices shape whether the protagonist follows a Jedi or dark-side path. The official description establishes the ancient setting, but not a definitive ranking against every other Old Republic game. StarWars.com: Knights of the Old Republic

2–3. Fallen Order, then Survivor

Jedi: Fallen Order belongs after Order 66, during the Empire’s rule. Cal Kestis is a Padawan who escaped the purge and is being hunted by Imperial Inquisitors. StarWars.com describes it as an original action-adventure story. StarWars.com: Jedi: Fallen Order

Continue with Jedi: Survivor. Its official page says the story picks up five years after Fallen Order, making this the clearest direct game-to-game sequence in the list. StarWars.com: Jedi: Survivor

4. Squadrons: late in the Galactic Civil War

Star Wars: Squadrons shifts focus from Cal Kestis to starfighter pilots. Its campaign takes place near the end of the Galactic Civil War, within the Age of the Rebellion, and is a self-contained story. The official game description gives broad placement rather than a specific year. EA: Star Wars: Squadrons

5. Battlefront II: follow the campaign as an arc

The 2017 Battlefront II single-player campaign is not one brief episode to slot at a single point. StarWars.com describes a story spanning 30 years, centered on an Imperial squad active around the destruction of the second Death Star and extending across the period from Return of the Jedi toward The Force Awakens. The game’s multiplayer also includes battles from three eras. Those matches are separate from the campaign’s continuous narrative, so they do not provide a substitute story-order entry. StarWars.com: Star Wars Battlefront II

How to choose a starting point

  • Choose Knights of the Old Republic for an ancient-era role-playing story with consequential light- or dark-side choices.
  • Choose Fallen Order if you want a connected, character-led action-adventure sequence; continue directly into Survivor.
  • Choose Squadrons for a self-contained campaign focused on starfighter combat rather than the Cal Kestis storyline.
  • Choose the Battlefront II campaign for a story that follows a long stretch of the post-Death Star era. Treat its multiplayer as separate from that campaign’s chronology.

What about Fate of the Old Republic?

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced by Lucasfilm Games in December 2025 as an all-new story set at the end of the Old Republic. The announcement does not establish a release date or current availability, so it belongs in an announced-project note rather than among the playable games in this timeline. How to read this timeline

“Story order” means the games’ in-universe placement, not the order they were released. StarWars.com uses the same distinction when explaining chronological and release-order guides for screen stories, but that guide is not a games chronology. This list therefore sticks to major story-led games whose official descriptions support the placements above; it does not claim to rank every Star Wars game or supply exact years where the official descriptions do not.
