Star Wars: Galactic Racer reportedly began taking shape as a physical board-game prototype covered in sticky notes. The point was not to simulate the finished racing game on a table; it was to get ideas in front of the team quickly and give them something concrete to discuss.

What the reported prototype looked like

A report about a Eurogamer interview says Fuse Games sketched out Star Wars: Galactic Racer as a board game using Post-It notes. Fuse Games CEO Matt Webster described the practical question behind that approach: “What’s the fastest way we can get ideas down and then talk about them?” The account presents the board and notes as a way to externalize ideas for discussion, not as a complete playable version of the eventual game.

Because the detail comes through a republication rather than a directly retrieved Eurogamer interview, it is best understood as a reported account of the developers’ process. The official game materials establish the project’s identity and design context, but do not independently confirm this particular prototype.

Why use sticky notes instead of starting in a game engine?

A physical sketch can make an early idea visible without first building the software systems needed to represent it. The team can move pieces or notes, change a rule, and discuss what the change might make a player feel. That is a useful fit when the question is still about the shape of an idea, rather than whether a finished vehicle handles correctly.

Creative director Kieran Crimmin’s reported explanation is that a prototyping tool should be chosen for the system being explored and for how quickly it can validate the intended emotion. The account also notes that a game engine can be capable, while written ideas may be faster for some early questions. It does not quantify any time savings or establish one method as universally better.

Why “game feel” matters to the story

In an official interview published September 1, 2026, the game and design directors discuss game feel through the handling and physics of the hovercraft, along with responsiveness, speed, and challenge. That focus helps explain why a team might use different prototypes for different questions: a quick physical sketch can help people talk through an idea, while a richer simulation is better suited to evaluating how a vehicle responds. The interview offers design context, not separate confirmation of the reported sticky-note prototype. Read it at StarWars.com’s game-feel interview.

What a small team can take from the approach

The useful lesson is not to copy the exact board or buy a particular brand of notes. It is to match the prototype to the question you need answered. Sticky notes are one inexpensive physical option for arranging ideas, but they are not a substitute for a simulation when the question depends on movement or precise timing.

  • For questions about sequence, choices, or how a system might be explained, try a quick sketch or tabletop arrangement.
  • For questions about motion, response, or physical sensation, use a tool capable of representing those qualities.
  • Keep the prototype’s purpose clear: a rough model can prompt discussion without proving that the final design will work.
