Lucasfilm’s April 25, 2014 announcement placed past Expanded Universe stories—including video games—under the Legends banner. It also said the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe story would not be the story told by Episodes VII–IX. That does not make every older game meaningless, nor does a familiar character or object make an entire older game part of current continuity. Check each game’s official description and story context.

What did Lucasfilm’s 2014 announcement change?

Lucasfilm said the Expanded Universe covered material in comics, novels, videogames, and other formats. It announced that the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe would not be the story told by Episodes VII–IX, while past stories would remain available “under the new Legends banner.” Read Lucasfilm’s April 25, 2014 announcement.

The announcement also described a Lucasfilm story group coordinating creative development and a future of interconnected storytelling across Star Wars formats. In practical terms, use Legends for the earlier Expanded Universe material covered by that announcement. For newer games, look at how official materials place the particular story within the newer connected storytelling landscape.

How can you tell where a game fits?

Release date alone, or the appearance of a familiar character, is not enough to establish a game’s continuity status. Check the game’s official description for its era, story, and relationship to other Star Wars stories. Official materials can situate a newer title within a particular era and storyline; for example, StarWars.com describes Jedi: Survivor as continuing Cal Kestis’ story in the Reign of the Empire era. See the official Jedi: Survivor game page.

Cross-media connections can show that a game shares material with a film or another story without transferring the entire plot of an older game into current continuity. StarWars.com notes that Battlefront II’s story concerns Luke Skywalker’s discovery of the Pillio Star Compass, which is also glimpsed in The Last Jedi or its visual guide. Its discussion of familiar characters and locations in Jedi: Survivor likewise illustrates connections across Star Wars stories, not a blanket rule for every older game. Read StarWars.com’s examples of connections in Star Wars video games.

What does the distinction look like in a game?

Jedi: Survivor

The official description calls Star Wars Jedi: Survivor a “third person galaxy-spanning action-adventure game” and says it picks up five years after Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. StarWars.com describes it as a single-player action-adventure and identifies its setting as the Reign of the Empire era. The official release announcement lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. See the April 28, 2023 release announcement.

Are Legends games still worth playing?

Continuity status and whether a game is enjoyable are separate questions. A Legends label describes how the story is classified in relation to current continuity; it does not rate the game’s writing, gameplay, or personal appeal. Lucasfilm’s 2014 announcement explicitly said demand for past Expanded Universe tales would keep them available under the Legends banner.

Choose a game based on the experience you want: its era and characters, story, gameplay format, and whether it runs on your platform or edition. The cited official descriptions establish context and product details, not a ranking of games, so continuity alone cannot tell you whether a particular title is worth your time.

A practical checklist before choosing a Star Wars game

  • Continuity: Is the title presented as earlier Expanded Universe material under Legends, or placed within newer connected storytelling by official materials?
  • Era and story: When is the game set, and whose story does it follow?
  • Gameplay: Is it a single-player action-adventure or another format that suits how you want to play?
  • Platform and edition: Confirm the specific platform and edition before buying; an official release announcement may establish supported platforms, but not current stock or listing details.
  • Connections: Treat a shared character, setting, or object as a connection—not automatic proof that an entire older game’s plot is current continuity.
