A standard TCP/IP port is a TCP port number commonly assigned or used for a particular application service. The port itself is a 16-bit number from 0 through 65535; it is not a service, a device, or an IP address. Whether a familiar port actually leads to a running service depends on how the communicating endpoints are configured.

What does a TCP port do?

TCP uses port numbers to identify application services and multiplex distinct flows between hosts, as specified in RFC 9293. A TCP segment carries a source port and a destination port. Together with the communicating systems’ IP addresses and the transport protocol, those values help identify a particular communication session.

The source port commonly identifies the sending application’s side of a connection; the destination port commonly indicates the service the client is trying to reach. These are roles in a communication, not permanent labels: replies reverse the source and destination roles.

Is a port number the same as an IP address?

No. An IP address identifies a network endpoint, while a TCP port identifies an application service or communication endpoint on that system. A useful shorthand is that the address gets traffic to the right network endpoint and the port helps direct it to the appropriate service or flow. The IP addresses, transport protocol, and source and destination ports work together; no one port number identifies a session on its own. RFC 6335 describes this combination and notes that a port’s service meaning is ultimately local to the communicating endpoints.

What are the standard TCP port ranges?

TCP port numbers use a 16-bit field, so the available values run from 0 to 65535. IANA divides the space into three registry categories. These are categories for port numbers, not different kinds of TCP connection.

Range Conventional label IANA assignment status
0–1023 System ports (also commonly called Well Known Ports) Assigned by IANA
1024–49151 User ports (also commonly called Registered Ports) Assigned by IANA
49152–65535 Dynamic ports; also called Private or Ephemeral ports Not assigned by IANA as service ports

The categories and ranges are defined by the IANA registry procedures in RFC 6335. RFC 7605 cautions that “registered” can be used ambiguously: it may mean all assigned numbers from 0 through 49151, or specifically the User range. Use “System,” “User,” and “Dynamic” when the distinction matters.

Does a standard port prove that a service is running?

No. A registered or customary port indicates an agreed or conventional service mapping, not that a service is listening on a particular machine. Administrators can configure a service to use a different port, and a familiar number may have no listener at all. Firewalls and network address translation (NAT) can also allow, block, or redirect traffic based on port numbers.

IANA maintains the current service-name and transport-port registry, but an assignment is not a guarantee of active service. Check the live IANA Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry for current assignments, and check the host or network configuration to determine what is actually listening.

What does “standard” mean in this phrase?

“Standard TCP/IP port” is usually conversational shorthand for a TCP port assigned or customarily used for a known service. The TCP header field itself is simply a number. Its interpretation depends on the service configuration and the endpoints’ agreement; the full range from 0 to 65535 is the available TCP namespace, not a list of standard services.

Be precise about the transport protocol. A TCP assignment does not automatically establish that the same number has the same meaning for UDP. TCP and UDP both use 16-bit port numbers, but their registry assignments and transport behavior are protocol-specific.
