Stacey Waaka is a Black Fern, but the specific claim that she has explained “why she’s bringing femininity to the rugby field” is not verified by the available reporting. A New Zealand Herald profile connects Waaka—now Stacey Fluhler—with a scrunchie project and women expressing their identities. The widely surfaced on-field lipstick explanation belongs to US rugby player Ilona Maher, not Waaka. Those stories share a theme, but they are not interchangeable.
What can be said about Stacey Waaka and femininity?
World Rugby’s 2025 New Zealand team media guide, published August 12, 2025, identifies Waaka as a Black Fern. A New Zealand Herald profile, “Stacey Fluhler Scrunchies: ‘You can be an athlete and embrace your true self’”, reports on her scrunchie project and her encouragement of women to express their identities.
That supports a discussion of self-expression, but it does not establish that Waaka made the precise on-field statement implied by this article’s original framing. The profile concerns her scrunchies and identity; it is not verified evidence of a particular explanation about bringing femininity onto the rugby field.

The explicit explanation about combining powerful rugby play with lipstick comes from Ilona Maher, a US rugby player, in a mindbodygreen interview. It is Maher’s perspective, not Waaka’s. Treating the two players as interchangeable would misattribute a personal view.

- Gilbert A-XV rugby ball
Maher’s interview can illustrate that some rugby players see feminine presentation and athletic power as compatible. It cannot tell readers what Waaka personally thinks about lipstick, makeup, or on-field femininity.
Why does self-expression matter in women’s rugby?
A 2024 qualitative study published in Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health examines women rugby players’ experiences of gender and embodiment in relation to tackle performance and safety. The authors describe constraining gender norms, the devaluing of women’s athletic achievements, and unequal playing conditions. They also discuss how players exercise agency and reshape expectations of participation. Read as context across participants, the findings help explain why identity and presentation can matter in rugby; they are not findings about Waaka specifically. Read the study.

What readers should take away
- Waaka is identified as a Black Fern in World Rugby’s 2025 team guide.
- Reporting on her scrunchie project connects her with encouraging women to express their identities, but does not verify the title’s specific on-field explanation.
- The on-field lipstick statement often associated with this theme was made by Ilona Maher, not Waaka.
- Research on women rugby players offers useful wider context about gender norms and agency, but it should not be presented as Waaka’s own testimony.
