Artists, charities and other tenants at St Margaret’s House in Edinburgh are reportedly facing a move-out deadline in January 2027 as the building’s owner advances a sale. The date and sale status come from a report published on 1 October 2026; the notices themselves have not been independently reviewed, so their precise legal terms remain unconfirmed.
What is happening at St Margaret’s House?
A report published by Streamline Feed on 1 October 2026 says tenants at St Margaret’s House have been told to leave by January 2027. It describes the building as a creative workspace operated by Scot-ART, with around 270 studio spaces across ten floors, and says Caledonian Trust is progressing a sale with a preferred purchaser. These are details attributed to that report, rather than independently verified notice terms or a confirmed sale.
The venue has provided workspace for artists as well as charities and community groups. The report does not identify replacement premises for those tenants or establish what will happen to each organization after the reported deadline.
Why has the owner given for the departure?
The 2026 report attributes the move to Caledonian Trust’s view that the building’s age and the standards needed for its long-term future are relevant. It also reports the company’s position that the lease had been on generous terms and tenants had time to relocate. That is the owner’s reported rationale, not an independently assessed account of the building’s condition or the time available to tenants.

What does the 2024 owner account establish?
In interim results published on 28 March 2024, Caledonian Trust said St Margaret’s House was fully let to Edinburgh Palette, which had reconfigured and sub-let space to “over 200 artists, artisans, entrepreneurs and galleries.” This is the owner’s description of the tenant ecosystem at that time; it does not establish current occupancy or the present number of studios.
The same results said the owner had planning consent for student and residential development and had retained an adviser to consider a sale. Those statements record the company’s position in March 2024. They do not confirm the current planning status, that development will proceed, or that a sale has been completed.

What has the MSP said?
The 1 October 2026 report attributes criticism of the closure to Q Manivannan, the Scottish Greens’ culture spokesperson and an Edinburgh and Lothian regional MSP. It reports that he characterized the impact as a “desolation” of the city’s charity sector. The available report does not provide a complete verbatim statement, so that wording should be understood as the report’s characterization of his view.

The available reporting does not establish the exact wording or legal effect of the notices, what relocation assistance—if any—has been offered, or whether any replacement workspace is secured. Tenants will need to consult their own notices and agreements for their individual dates and obligations.
