If a Linux installer cannot see an SSD that appears in your computer’s firmware, check whether the storage controller is set to Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST), RAID, or AHCI. Ubuntu documents cases where RST prevents the installer from accessing disks. Switching to AHCI or disabling RST may help, but it is not a universal fix—and changing the setting can affect an existing Windows installation or RAID data.

First, confirm where the SSD disappears

  1. Open the computer’s firmware setup. Check whether the SSD is listed there. If the drive is missing from firmware too, the installer is not the only layer to investigate; the available documentation does not establish a hardware diagnosis.
  2. If firmware sees it, inspect the storage mode. Look for Intel RST, RAID, or AHCI settings. Menu names and locations differ among manufacturers.
  3. Identify the drive and controller. Note whether the SSD is SATA or NVMe and whether the firmware mentions VMD. Ubuntu’s AHCI guidance concerns SATA devices, so RST instructions alone do not establish that AHCI is the right remedy for an NVMe or VMD configuration.

Ubuntu’s 24.04 desktop documentation says: “If the Ubuntu installer can’t detect the disks that you need, you must turn off RST in the computer’s firmware before you can install Ubuntu.” That guidance is specifically about the documented RST installation issue; available options and supported configurations vary by computer. Ubuntu: Intel RST during Ubuntu installation

When changing RST or RAID to AHCI may help

Some firmware configurations group disks behind Intel RST or RAID. Ubuntu notes that its installer may detect certain RAID configurations yet still be unable to access the disks within them. For an installation that does not need to preserve an existing operating system or RAID data, Ubuntu’s documented options are to turn off RST or change the controller protocol to AHCI, if the firmware offers that choice.

AHCI is not a blanket setting for every SSD. Ubuntu describes it as an interface designed for advanced features of disks connected through the Serial ATA (SATA) bus. If you have an NVMe drive, see VMD in firmware, or do not find the expected option, do not assume that switching to AHCI is appropriate. Ubuntu’s RST and AHCI guidance

Before changing firmware settings

  • Back up important files. Changing storage configuration can make RAID data inaccessible, and a controller-mode change can prevent an existing Windows installation from booting.
  • Do not break a RAID array casually. If the disks contain data you need, establish how the array is configured and how to preserve or access it before changing firmware settings.
  • For Windows dual boot, prepare Windows first. Follow Ubuntu’s documented transition procedure rather than changing the firmware mode directly. Its instructions include preparing Windows storage drivers and Safe boot before the firmware change; the page also calls for disabling BitLocker and Intel Optane acceleration where applicable. After Windows starts under AHCI, the procedure removes Safe boot and verifies the mode. Follow the current instructions for your Windows and firmware setup. Ubuntu: Reconfigure Windows to use AHCI

Try the firmware change when it is safe

  1. Record the current storage setting and confirm you have a backup of any data at risk.
  2. Enter firmware setup using the method for your computer model. Find the storage-controller setting; the label may refer to RST, RAID, SATA mode, or AHCI.
  3. If you are installing on a machine without an existing OS or RAID data to preserve, choose the documented option your firmware provides: disable RST or select AHCI. Not every computer offers both choices.
  4. Save the change, restart the Ubuntu installer, and check whether the target SSD is now available. If it remains absent, stop treating AHCI as the only explanation and collect the computer model, drive type, firmware setting, distribution and release, and installer diagnostics.

Ubuntu’s installation tutorial describes booting the installer from a USB flash drive; installation media is needed to run the installer, but it does not make a drive hidden by RST visible. Ubuntu: Install Ubuntu Desktop

If AHCI does not make the SSD appear

There is no single verified remedy here for every VMD configuration, NVMe detection problem, or physical drive fault. Confirm the drive type and firmware mode, then consult documentation for the exact computer and Linux distribution. For Debian, the project wiki documents installation approaches for SATA RAID or fakeraid; that distribution-specific guidance does not mean every array is safe to alter or supported in the same way.
