A driver who stopped for a snake on Sri Lanka’s Southern Expressway was struck from behind by a bus, setting off a three-vehicle crash, according to a Daily Mirror report published 12 August 2026. The outlet attributed its account to police; an earlier same-day report gave different details, and it is not established whether the two accounts describe the same collision.

What happened on the Southern Expressway

Daily Mirror reported that on 11 August 2026, a luxury car travelling from Kokmaduwa towards Colombo stopped after its driver saw a snake crossing the road between the Pinnaduwa and Kokmaduwa interchanges. A luxury bus travelling behind it, from Matara towards Piliyandala, then hit the car from behind. The car spun and struck another luxury car travelling towards Colombo before coming to rest against the left guardrail. Daily Mirror’s report attributed the account to police.

Daily Mirror said the first car’s driver and two female passengers, all from Ratmalana, were injured and taken to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle. Traffic was disrupted. The report did not identify the snake’s species or say what happened to it.

Why reports differ on the collision

A Newswire report published at 12:04 p.m. on 11 August described a three-vehicle collision near kilometre post 115 between Kokmaduwa and Imaduwa. It said one vehicle overturned and two people were injured, and that authorities were investigating; it did not mention a snake. Newswire’s account may refer to the same crash, but the available reports do not establish that conclusively. The difference between Newswire’s two reported injuries and Daily Mirror’s three is unexplained, so the accounts should not be merged into a single settled tally or reconstruction.

How to report an expressway incident in Sri Lanka

The Road Development Authority (RDA) says motorists can use 1969 for expressway information and to report problems, breakdowns, accidents, or unusual incidents. Its FAQ describes the call centre as operating 24 hours. This is general RDA guidance, not information about how responders handled this particular crash. See the RDA expressway FAQ. The RDA also describes its Expressway Traffic Operation Center as connected to the 1969 emergency call system, CCTV surveillance, and variable message signs, with operators coordinating responses; details are on the RDA services page.
