There is no single Square alternative that wins for every merchant. Square bundles POS software, payments, inventory, reporting and hardware in one ecosystem, which is why it is often the starting point. The alternatives worth evaluating each solve a different constraint: processing cost at higher volume, deep retail inventory, restaurant workflow, ecommerce synchronization, or custom online payments. Build your shortlist from the constraint that hurts most, then compare total cost in the country where you operate.

This is an editorial comparison built from 2026 vendor and publisher comparison pages. It is not a Product Hunt ranking, and no Product Hunt launch list or category data informed the selection.

What Square covers, and why merchants look elsewhere

Square’s official comparison page (UK/GB context, accessed 7 October 2026) describes its offering as covering online and in-person selling, inventory, reporting, payment acceptance and hardware, and says multi-location management features are available. Merchants usually start looking at alternatives when one of these pressures appears:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Processing costs become a larger share of the bill as card volume grows.
  • Inventory is multi-location, variant-heavy, or needs purchasing and vendor management.
  • The business is a restaurant that needs menus, kitchen displays, table service or online ordering.
  • You want a choice of processor or a traditional merchant account rather than a single provider’s arrangement.
  • Your online store or custom checkout needs deeper integration than an all-in-one setup offers.

Each of these is a reason to compare, not evidence that Square cannot support a given business.

The competitors Square names, and why they are not interchangeable

Square’s official page lists SumUp, Zettle, Dojo, Shopify, Stripe, EPOS Now, Lightspeed, Toast, PayPal, Adyen and Worldpay as comparison competitors. That list mixes different kinds of business:

  • Payment and card-acceptance providers such as SumUp, Zettle, Dojo, PayPal, Adyen and Worldpay, where the core question is how you accept money and on what terms.
  • Full point-of-sale systems such as Lightspeed, Toast and EPOS Now, where inventory, staff, and industry workflow matter most.
  • Ecommerce platforms such as Shopify, where the online store and the till share products and orders.
  • Developer payment APIs such as Stripe, where you build the checkout yourself.

Comparing across these groups without sorting them first produces misleading results. A payments API cannot replace a retail back office, and a restaurant POS does not automatically reduce card-processing costs.

How to compare alternatives

Use these six axes to test any shortlist candidate against your own operation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Total cost at your real volume and transaction mix. Include the software plan, card-present and card-not-present rates, hardware, add-ons and contract terms. An advertised starting price is not a quote for your business.
  • Inventory and location complexity. Check catalog size, variants, purchasing, vendor management and central controls across locations. These matter more as operations grow.
  • Industry workflow. A restaurant may need menu management, kitchen displays, table service, online ordering and service coordination. These are different requirements from a simple checkout counter.
  • Online and offline sales relationship. Ecommerce-led merchants should see how products, inventory, orders and customer records connect across web and in-person sales.
  • Processing and integration flexibility. Some alternatives offer a traditional merchant account, third-party processing or developer APIs. Those are not equivalent to an all-in-one general POS.
  • Hardware and geography. Confirm device compatibility, availability, support and payment processing in your country. The sources cited here include UK, Canada and US-focused pages, so their prices should not be blended.

Shortlist by business need

The table maps common business needs to alternatives that the 2026 comparison pages associate with them. These are shortlist prompts drawn from those publishers’ descriptions. No hands-on testing was carried out for this guide, and rankings or plan figures belong to the publishers that published them.

Business need Alternatives to compare Why they may fit Caveat
Growing business prioritizing interchange-plus pricing or B2B payment tools Helcim TechRepublic’s July 2, 2026 comparison describes interchange-plus pricing, volume discounts and B2B tools. Involves an application and underwriting. Any pricing advantage depends on your actual card mix and volume; the source is an editorial comparison, not a guaranteed quote.
Retail with deeper inventory or multiple locations Lightspeed Comparison sources associate it with advanced inventory, purchasing and multi-location management. Confirm the functions you need, required integrations, plan tier, hardware and local terms.
Restaurant or food service Toast Sources describe restaurant-specific hardware and workflows, including menus, kitchen displays, ordering and service operations. Compare the exact restaurant workflow, plan, processing terms, hardware and contract for each location.
Ecommerce-led seller adding in-person transactions Shopify POS Sources describe centralized, synchronized commerce across online and physical sales. Plan requirements, payment-provider charges, hardware and country-specific costs need checking. Shopify’s own page is Canada-oriented.
Developer-led online payments or custom checkout Stripe TechRepublic describes APIs, global payments, subscriptions, marketplaces and custom checkout. Not a like-for-like replacement for an inventory-rich POS. Budget for integration and development effort.
Configurable packaged POS and payment arrangements Clover Sources describe app-based configuration and options involving merchant providers. Actual pricing and processor choice depend on the provider and your merchant agreement.
Mobile or occasional in-person sales SumUp Square names SumUp as a competitor; an editorial comparison includes it among options for mobile and low-ticket selling. Verify device, fee and account terms locally. The sources do not establish a universal advantage over Square.

Why headline processing rates do not show total cost

A processing rate is one line item in what you actually pay. A simple way to model monthly cost is:

Monthly cost = software plan + (card-present volume × card-present rate) + (card-not-present volume × card-not-present rate) + per-transaction fixed fees + monthly add-ons + hardware cost spread over the contract or useful life

ETEKJOY USB 3-Track Magnetic Stripe Card Reader POS Credit Card Reader Swiper MagStripe Swipe Card Reader ET-MSR90
  • USB interface, keyboard emulation, no need to install software to read, configuration software for changing settings available.
  • Read data from all 3 tracks, high and low coercivity cards, ISO7811, AAMVA, CA DMV and most magnetic card data formats.
  • Work on Windows, Mac and other USB capable systems. Work with TXT, notepad, Word, Excel, POS systems and son on.
  • Compact size, with 145cm USB cord, two 3mm-diameter screw holes for fixing at the bottom, a LED indicator light
  • Perfect for POS, Banking, Loyalty, Access Control, ID verification and other applications.

Two merchants with the same headline rate can end up with very different totals. A merchant taking mostly keyed or online payments pays a different effective rate from one taking mostly chip-and-tap in person. Restaurants with heavy tip and table volume, and retailers with many small tickets, also see fixed fees carry more weight. Run the formula with the last three months of your own statements, then request written pricing that uses the same inputs.
