In July 2025, an unrelated AI-generated song appeared on the Spotify profile of Blaze Foley, the singer-songwriter killed in 1989. The track, “Together,” was not authorized by the label managing Foley’s catalog and was later removed. The incident raised a basic question: how can listeners tell whether a track or artist profile is genuinely connected to the person it appears to represent?
What appeared on Blaze Foley’s Spotify page?
Futurism reported on July 24, 2025, that “Together” had appeared on Foley’s Spotify profile. The report described it as unrelated to Foley and AI-generated, with an AI-generated cover image. Craig McDonald, who owns the label managing Foley’s catalog, said, “I can clearly tell you that this song is not Blaze, not anywhere near Blaze’s style, at all.” He also called it “an AI schlock bot, if you will.” The track was subsequently removed. The report also noted similar AI tracks on other artists’ pages, including Guy Clark’s, and said the Foley upload credited “Syntax Error.” It does not establish that Spotify created the song. Spotify said the content violated its deceptive-content policy, pointing instead to a problem with content supplied through licensors or distributors.

Why did the incident matter?
A music profile carries an implied connection between an artist and the work shown there. An unauthorized synthetic song placed on a deceased musician’s established page can mislead listeners into thinking the artist made, approved, or endorsed it. The artist cannot consent, and a familiar profile can lend the track credibility it would not have on an unknown account.

The issue is not simply that AI may have been used to make music. It is the combination of an artist’s identity, a misleading profile placement, and the absence of authorization.
What rules and enforcement has Spotify announced?
Spotify said its deceptive-content policy prohibits impersonation intended to mislead, including deceptive use of another creator’s name, image, or description, or posing as a person, brand, or organization. The company said it acts against licensors and distributors that fail to police fraud and can permanently remove repeat or egregious violators. Futurism’s report

In a September 25, 2025 policy announcement, Spotify said it had removed more than 75 million spammy tracks in the prior 12 months. The company also announced stronger enforcement against unauthorized AI voice clones, a spam filter aimed at mass-upload and recommendation-abuse tactics, and AI disclosures in music credits. Its stated rule is: “Vocal impersonation is only allowed in music on Spotify when the impersonated artist has authorized the usage.” Spotify’s AI policy announcement
Spotify says AI credits depend on artists, labels, or distributors disclosing AI use. Its description treats AI as a spectrum that can involve vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, or post-production. Therefore, a track with no AI credit is not necessarily made without AI.

How can listeners identify AI music or an AI artist on Spotify?
Spotify’s announced transparency features answer two different questions: whether a profile’s presented identity appears AI-generated, and whether AI contributions to a specific song were disclosed.
AI Persona badges identify some profiles
On August 11, 2026, Spotify announced AI Persona badges. The company said the badges would begin rolling out in mid-September 2026 for some profiles whose public identity appears AI-generated. Spotify said it would not rely only on self-disclosure and could apply labels after review. It also said AI Personas would, by default, be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener follows them. These are announced rollout policies; their implementation may change. Spotify’s 2026 transparency announcement

A badge concerns the apparent identity behind a profile. It does not, by itself, describe which parts of every track were created with AI.

AI Credits describe disclosed contributions to a track
AI Credits concern how a particular song was made, such as whether AI contributed vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, or post-production. Because credits rely on disclosures from artists, labels, or distributors, they are not a complete detection system: missing credits do not prove a track was made entirely by people. Other profile and discovery features
Spotify’s 2026 transparency package also includes Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, Artist Details, and Artist Profile Protection. Spotify says hundreds of thousands of profiles are verified, representing more than 99% of artists listeners actively search, and that tens of thousands of AI credits are submitted daily. These are company-reported figures, not independent measures of how often impersonation is detected or prevented. Spotify’s 2026 transparency announcement

Spotify announced that AI Persona profiles would be excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless the listener follows them, with the policy tied to the mid-September 2026 rollout. That measure concerns profiles Spotify identifies as AI Personas; it does not establish that every AI-assisted track is excluded. Spotify’s separate spam filter announcement targets mass uploads and recommendation abuse, but the company’s statements do not show that all synthetic music will be kept out of recommendations.
If an unfamiliar track appears under a known artist’s name, check the artist and track details rather than assuming the profile placement proves authorship. Profile badges and disclosed credits can offer context, but the absence of either is not conclusive evidence that a profile is human or a song contains no AI.
