Neither platform is universally better. Spotify for Creators is the more integrated option if you want free hosting, Spotify-specific analytics, comments, video publishing and access to Spotify monetization programs when your show meets the requirements. Apple Podcasts is a catalog and management service: it accepts a show from a third-party RSS host or through Apple Podcasts Connect, validates it and makes it available to Apple listeners. Most creators do not need to choose one. Host your show wherever your workflow fits, then distribute the same RSS feed to both services.
The practical choice depends on whether you prioritize integrated hosting, Apple catalog discovery, Spotify measurement, video, paid subscriptions, or platform-specific monetization eligibility.
Spotify and Apple Podcasts are different parts of the publishing stack
“Spotify versus Apple Podcasts” sounds like a choice between two competing hosts, but the services play different roles for many creators.

Spotify for Creators combines hosting and distribution
Spotify for Creators presents itself as an end-to-end podcast service. Its advertised tools include free podcast hosting, audio and video uploads, distribution to major podcast apps, analytics, comments and monetization features. If you host there, Spotify can provide the RSS feed and publishing workflow while also giving you a destination inside Spotify.

Those are Spotify product claims, not proof that hosting on Spotify automatically increases downloads or audience size. Distribution to other apps still depends on the destination setup, directory approval and your show’s availability.
Apple Podcasts is a catalog, listening service and management console
Apple Podcasts primarily provides the catalog and listening experience. Apple Podcasts Connect is where a creator submits a show, manages its listing and accesses Apple’s creator tools. Apple accepts shows from a publicly available RSS feed hosted elsewhere, and it also supports publishing through Apple’s own creator workflow.
Apple requires technical validation and review before a submitted show appears. A feed must be publicly addressable, use RSS 2.0, contain at least one episode and include artwork. The feed can be generated by you or by a hosting provider.

You can host on Spotify for Creators and submit that feed to Apple Podcasts. You can also host with an independent provider and submit the same feed to Spotify and Apple. The meaningful comparison is therefore platform capability: hosting, distribution, analytics, discovery, video and monetization—not an exclusive decision between two listening apps.

How to publish on both platforms
Option 1: Host with Spotify for Creators
- Create or sign in to your Spotify for Creators account and start a podcast.
- Upload an audio episode or a supported video episode, add the title, description, artwork and other metadata, then publish or schedule it.
- Review the RSS feed generated by the service and confirm that your show details are correct.
- Submit that RSS feed to Apple Podcasts Connect. Apple will validate the feed and place the show into its review process.
- After approval, maintain episodes and metadata at the host. Check Apple Podcasts Connect for the Apple-specific listing and listener data.
This arrangement minimizes setup because one service handles hosting while the RSS feed reaches more than one catalog. It also means your production workflow is tied to Spotify’s hosting requirements if you later want to use Spotify monetization programs.
Option 2: Use a third-party RSS host
- Create the show with a hosting provider that issues a public RSS 2.0 feed.
- Publish at least one episode and add compliant artwork and metadata.
- Submit the feed to Apple Podcasts Connect and complete Apple’s validation and review.
- Submit or connect the feed to Spotify and any other listening directories you want to reach.
- Keep the host as the source of truth for episode files, feed redirects and global metadata, while checking each directory for platform-specific settings.
Apple recommends using a third-party hosting provider for RSS-based publishing. This architecture is useful when you want to change listening destinations without moving the underlying feed, or when your host offers production and distribution tools that a listening service does not.
Option 3: Publish through Apple’s creator workflow
Apple Podcasts Connect can support subscriptions and show management during setup. If your show is supplied by RSS, Apple still requires a publicly reachable feed that passes technical validation. The feed’s metadata can override information entered manually in Connect, so correct the source feed when Apple displays an unexpected title, author, category or description.

Hosting decisions that affect the comparison
When Spotify hosting is the simpler choice
- You want to avoid paying for or configuring a separate host and Spotify’s free hosting meets your needs.
- You plan to upload both audio and video and want those files managed in one creator dashboard.
- You care about Spotify comments, audience views and Spotify-specific monetization eligibility.
- You are comfortable checking that the generated RSS feed is accepted by Apple and other directories.
When an independent host is the safer long-term choice
- You want the listening-app choice to remain separate from the company hosting your media.
- You need a single RSS workflow across several directories or plan to migrate between creator services.
- Your preferred host provides feed redirects, advanced team permissions, analytics or delivery controls that are important to your operation.
- You want to use Spotify as a destination without making Spotify your required host.
A Libsyn announcement dated April 29, 2026 said video publishing was available on its plans and that video could be distributed to Spotify and YouTube. The announcement described Apple Podcasts video distribution as forthcoming; it does not establish that Apple video distribution subsequently launched. Treat such rollout statements as time-sensitive and verify the current host and directory status before changing your workflow.
Analytics: why Spotify and Apple numbers cannot be added together
Spotify’s June 2026 play definition
On June 11, 2026, Spotify announced: “Starting today, play counts will now reflect the number of times an episode was watched or listened to for at least thirty seconds.” Spotify said the definition aligns with the Podcast Plays definition announced by the Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting.
The 30-second threshold is a Spotify platform metric definition. It is not evidence that every podcast service, advertiser or industry report uses the same rule. A short listen that appears in one dashboard may be excluded from another because of different thresholds, time windows or counting methods.
New Spotify views for audience and engagement
Spotify’s update also described first-time versus returning audience views, comparisons of an episode with the rest of a show’s catalog, an engagement tab and historical information reaching back to a creator’s first day on Spotify. These views can help you identify whether an episode is attracting new people, bringing back existing listeners or holding attention relative to your own catalog.

Apple Podcasts Connect lets creators manage shows and track listener insights. The available Apple and Spotify documentation does not establish identical definitions, coverage, attribution windows or reporting delays. Compare trends within each dashboard rather than treating a Spotify play count and an Apple listener figure as interchangeable units.
- Use Spotify data to evaluate Spotify audience behavior, 30-second plays, engagement and episode comparisons.
- Use Apple data to evaluate Apple listeners and the performance of your Apple catalog presence.
- Do not add the two dashboards to claim a single deduplicated audience total; the same person may appear on both services.
- Record the date and metric definition whenever you report numbers to sponsors or collaborators.
Discovery: Apple catalog submission is not the same as a direct RSS follow
Why catalog submission matters
A show submitted through Apple Podcasts Connect can be searchable in Apple’s catalog and distributed to services that reference that catalog, subject to the show’s availability settings. Completing validation and review gives Apple the information it needs to display the listing, artwork, ratings, reviews, subscriptions and other catalog features.
What a direct RSS follow does
Apple also allows a listener to follow a show directly by entering its RSS URL. That shortcut can deliver episodes to the listener, but Apple says a direct RSS follow does not qualify for editorial featuring. It also does not provide promotional artwork, ratings, reviews, subscriptions or Apple Podcasts Analytics in the listener’s Library.

Therefore, sending someone only an RSS URL is not an equivalent substitute for submitting the show to Apple’s catalog. If Apple search visibility and creator analytics matter, complete the Apple Podcasts Connect submission and review process.

Spotify Partner Program
Spotify lists the Spotify Partner Program as a route to advertising revenue and, for eligible video episodes, premium video revenue. The current eligibility page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists these requirements for applicants in eligible markets:

These thresholds are gates, not a promise of earnings. Check the Monetization page inside your Spotify creator account for your country and current eligibility before choosing Spotify hosting solely for this program.
Spotify subscriptions and an official inconsistency
Spotify also offers subscriptions through its creator service in eligible markets. Its current product page says a show needs at least two published episodes and 100 unique Spotify listeners. That page describes a 60-day listener period, while linked support material describes a 30-day period. Because Spotify’s own pages differ, do not treat either window as universally settled. Use the eligibility panel in your creator dashboard for the requirement that applies to your show.
External membership integrations
Spotify says eligible integrations can connect paid podcast content from external membership services, including Patreon, Substack and Supporting Cast. Availability depends on the show and integration, and may not require Spotify hosting. Check the integration settings before promising members that their private episodes will appear in Spotify.
Host-read deals versus Spotify-served advertising
Spotify says creators keep revenue from their own baked-in host-read deals. That arrangement is different from advertising served through Spotify’s programs. A sponsor agreement you negotiate directly should not be described as Spotify advertising, and Spotify-served ads should not be represented as your own host-read inventory.
Apple Podcasts subscriptions
Apple lets creators add a subscription during show setup in Apple Podcasts Connect, set pricing and configure free-trial settings. Apple requires review and subscriber audio before the subscription becomes available. The sources used for this comparison do not establish current Apple creator fees, payout terms or a directly comparable revenue share against Spotify, so a claim that one platform pays more would be unsupported without current terms and an identical scenario.

Audio, video and format considerations
Audio-first shows
Both services can receive an audio podcast through RSS. If your main goal is broad directory access, the critical requirements are a reliable host, a valid public feed, complete metadata, compliant artwork and successful directory validation. The listening service you prefer does not remove those feed responsibilities.
Video podcasts
Spotify for Creators advertises video uploads and its 2026 analytics announcement covers episodes that are watched or listened to. Its monetization information describes premium video revenue in selected markets. Video creators should verify, in the current dashboard, which countries, episode types and monetization products apply.

Do not assume that a video file accepted by one service will appear as video everywhere the RSS feed is submitted.
Metadata and artwork
Keep the title, author, description, categories and artwork consistent at the host and in each directory. Apple notes that feed metadata can override metadata entered in Connect. When a change does not appear, inspect the source RSS feed first, then allow for directory caching and review time.

New creator who wants the least setup friction
Start with Spotify for Creators if free integrated hosting, audio or video uploads and Spotify tools are your priority. Submit the resulting RSS feed to Apple Podcasts Connect as well if you want Apple listeners and catalog discovery. This gives you a simple host without giving up the second major destination.
Creator focused on Apple search and catalog discovery
Use a valid RSS host or participating provider, submit the feed through Apple Podcasts Connect and complete validation and review. Do not rely only on a direct RSS URL follow, because that route omits catalog promotion, ratings, reviews, subscriptions and Apple Podcasts Analytics in the listener’s Library.

Creator pursuing Spotify monetization
Open Spotify’s Monetization area before committing to a hosting move. Confirm your country, hosting status, episode count, audience members, consumption hours and the exact program available to your account. Thresholds are measured over stated rolling periods and can change.

Creator with a paid membership elsewhere
Check whether Spotify supports your membership provider and show. Patreon, Substack and Supporting Cast are examples Spotify lists, but an example is not a guarantee that every account or content type qualifies.
Video-first creator
Compare the current upload, distribution, analytics, advertising and subscriber workflows rather than assuming that an audio RSS submission covers video. Spotify documents video uploads and premium video revenue in selected markets; verify Apple’s current video handling and every directory’s accepted media format.
Established creator who wants maximum optionality
Use an independent RSS host, submit the feed to both Apple Podcasts Connect and Spotify, and evaluate each destination’s analytics separately. This preserves the ability to change listening destinations without rebuilding the underlying show.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose the media host. Decide whether Spotify’s integrated hosting is sufficient or whether you need an independent RSS provider.
- Confirm your format. Identify whether you publish audio only, video, or both, and verify that each destination accepts the files you plan to distribute.
- Build a compliant feed. Make it publicly addressable, use RSS 2.0, include at least one episode and provide artwork and complete metadata.
- Submit to Apple. Use Apple Podcasts Connect, pass validation and complete review if Apple catalog discovery matters.
- Connect Spotify. Submit or connect the feed, then check that episodes, artwork and descriptions appear correctly.
- Set measurement rules. Document which dashboard and definition you use for each report; Spotify’s current play count requires at least 30 seconds.
- Check monetization before planning revenue. Review country, hosting and rolling audience or consumption requirements in the current Spotify Monetization panel, and review Apple’s subscription requirements if you plan to sell access there.
- Audit after every major change. Verify the RSS feed, one recent episode, artwork, links and availability in both catalogs after changing hosts or metadata.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Assuming one submission reaches every app
A feed hosted on Spotify or elsewhere is not automatically approved in every directory. Submit it to Apple Podcasts Connect and any additional destinations you want, then complete each service’s validation or review.
Using a direct Apple RSS follow as your discovery strategy
Direct RSS follows omit Apple catalog features and analytics. Submit the show through Connect when search visibility, ratings, reviews, editorial consideration or Apple subscription features matter.
Comparing raw Spotify and Apple totals
Different services can count plays, listeners and time windows differently, and the same person may use both. Report platform-specific trends instead of adding the numbers into one audience figure.
Planning around a monetization threshold without checking the dashboard
Spotify requirements vary by program, country and hosting arrangement. The Partner Program currently lists 1,000 audience members, 2,000 hours and three episodes in specified markets; subscriptions have conflicting official listener windows. Verify your account’s current panel before making a revenue forecast.
Changing metadata in the wrong place
For an RSS-hosted show, the feed can override values entered in Apple Podcasts Connect. Correct the host’s source metadata, then wait for directory updates and recheck the listing.
Treating a host-read sponsorship as platform advertising
Keep direct sponsor agreements separate from Spotify-served advertising in your contracts, rate cards and disclosures. The revenue path and reporting are different.
Bottom line for creators
Choose Spotify for Creators when integrated free hosting, Spotify analytics, engagement tools, video uploads or Spotify monetization eligibility are central to your workflow. Choose Apple Podcasts Connect when Apple catalog discovery, Apple listener management or Apple subscriptions are central. For most serious shows, the strongest setup is not either-or: use a host that fits your operational needs, submit the feed to both catalogs, and judge each platform with its own analytics and eligibility rules.
