Sports memorabilia can be meaningful to collect, but it is not a dependable investment: prices are uncertain, selling can take time, and fees can consume a substantial share of a sale. Authentication helps address some fraud risk; it does not guarantee an item’s value, future appreciation, or an easy exit. Consider buying primarily for the enjoyment of owning an item unless you can afford to lose money and have a specific, evidence-based reason to expect demand.
Is sports memorabilia a good investment?
There is no representative, current return statistic established for sports memorabilia as a whole. The category includes trading cards, autographs, tickets, jerseys, bats, and other objects with different buyers, pricing evidence, and risks. A result for one card or jersey cannot stand in for the performance of the category—or predict what another collector will earn.
Two notable auction results illustrate why headline prices need context. CFA Institute reported that a 1932 Babe Ruth “called shot” jersey sold for USD 24.12 million in 2024, following a 2005 sale for USD 940,000. It also reported a 1952 Mickey Mantle card sold for USD 12.6 million in 2022; the card had a 9.5 grade from Sportscard Guaranty Corporation. These are exceptional transactions, not typical outcomes or a usable return series. The two prices for the jersey do not establish an annualized return for memorabilia generally, nor account here for transaction costs or the circumstances of either sale. CFA Institute’s discussion of sports memorabilia provides the context for those records.

It helps to separate collecting from investing. A collector may be satisfied with an item’s historical or personal significance even if its resale value falls. Someone buying mainly for financial return needs a plausible resale market, comparable realized sales, a cost-aware exit plan, and the ability to wait. Neither a famous athlete’s name nor a high asking price establishes those conditions.

What makes memorabilia valuable—and hard to value?
Value depends on the specific object, not just the athlete or team. Relevant factors include authenticity and provenance, condition or grade, scarcity, documented game use, buyer demand, and the quality of comparable sale evidence. A seller’s asking price, appraisal, or price guide is not the same thing as a completed sale.
- Trading cards: Cards often have standardized grading and population reports, making condition and reported scarcity easier to compare than for many unique objects. A low population report can be informative, but does not by itself establish demand or a future sale price.
- Autographs: The signer, item, signing circumstances, provenance, and authentication all matter. An autograph on one type of object may not be directly comparable to another.
- Tickets and other paper items: Condition, event significance, provenance, and category-specific population data may affect comparisons. Available reporting differs by category.
- Game-used equipment: Evidence that an item was used in a particular game or by a particular player is central. Wear can support the story of use, unlike the preference for pristine condition common with many cards, but wear alone does not prove game use.
Population data are available for some high-end cards, coins, pins, and ticket stubs, according to CFA Institute. The article also said PSA’s population reports at the time covered only bats among game-used categories. Reporting can change, so check the current database for the exact type of item under consideration; the absence of a population count is not proof of rarity.
What are the risks of investing in sports memorabilia?
Counterfeits and misleading provenance
Counterfeiting is a documented risk across memorabilia types. A 2019 alert from the United States Postal Inspection Service described counterfeit bats, balls, jerseys, helmets, photographs, autographs, and other items. Its language reflects that alert, not a current estimate of how common fakes are. The practical point is to evaluate the individual item rather than assume that a convincing appearance or seller story is sufficient. The Postal Inspection Service’s “Fake Sports Memorabilia” alert outlines the fraud concern.

Thin or incomparable sales evidence
Unique items are difficult to price because an apparently similar object may differ in provenance, condition, player association, or documentation. A record-setting auction does not show what an ordinary example will sell for. Prefer completed sales of genuinely comparable items and note differences rather than treating a guide value or appraisal as cash you can realize.
Illiquidity and changing market structure
An item may take time to sell, attract no acceptable bids, or require a venue whose costs and terms reduce proceeds. Platform arrangements and grading standards can also change. Altan Insights’ 2023 market report described Beckett reversing a grading-scale change after hobbyist reaction and the sale of fractional platform Collectable after assets had been sent to auction. These are historical examples of market-structure risk; that report alone does not establish either business’s current status.
Concentration and uncertain demand
Interest in an athlete, team, or era can shift. A rare item can still have few likely buyers, and scarcity does not guarantee appreciation. Do not treat memorabilia as a reliable hedge, a dependable diversifier, or a substitute for liquid savings on the evidence presented here.

How can you check whether an item is authentic?
Authentication is a risk-reduction step, not a guarantee of authenticity in every circumstance and never proof of investment value. PSA says its autograph authenticators examine ink, autograph structure, the object, and comparisons. It also says certification can be checked online or in its mobile app. PSA’s authentication service information describes its process; service details can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Start with the seller. Prefer a reputable seller with clear descriptions, a return policy you understand, and documentation they can explain. PSA’s FAQ recommends reputable sellers and established third-party authentication or grading where appropriate. Check PSA’s current FAQ for its guidance and terms.
- Inspect the provenance. Ask what is known about the item’s ownership and, for claimed game-used objects, what evidence connects it to the player or event. Distinguish documented history from a seller’s unsupported assertion.
- Verify the certification independently. Enter the certification number in the authenticator’s own database or app. Confirm that the record’s description—and any available image—matches the exact object being offered. A valid number attached to a different item is not verification of the item in front of you.
- Assess the item itself. Check that the material, signatures, labels, condition, and distinguishing marks align with the certificate and listing. Seek specialist advice if the item’s value or uniqueness warrants it.
- Keep the paperwork and images. Retain invoices, provenance records, authentication details, and clear photographs. These may help establish what you bought and support a later sale, but do not ensure a buyer or a particular price.
Authentication, grading, and appraisal are separate services with different purposes. Grading assesses condition under a grading system; authentication addresses whether an item or signature is genuine under the provider’s process; appraisal estimates value. None guarantees that an item will sell at the appraised figure or appreciate.
What costs should you expect?
Calculate the total cost of owning and eventually selling an item, not just its sticker price or a quoted grading fee. The exact amount depends on the item, service, shipping choices, and sale venue; there is no universal fee total.

- Transport and protection: Packing, insured shipping, return shipping, storage, display, and insurance may matter, particularly for valuable or fragile items.
- Selling: Auction or consignment terms, payment costs, and shipping can reduce proceeds. Terms differ by transaction and sale.
PSA’s submission process asks customers to determine submission price, shipping, and packaging; its service levels use a declared maximum insured value that also affects shipping insurance and potential claim limits. PSA says its turnaround estimates are not guaranteed and can change. As its service page puts it, “Estimated Turnaround Times are estimates only and not guaranteed.” Verify current fees, limits, packing directions, and timing before sending anything. PSA’s service information is the place to check its current process. Heritage Auctions’ sports collectibles FAQ covers fees, shipping and handling, buyer premiums, and consigning; the terms depend on the relevant sale.

Use item-specific evidence and compare the likely net outcome, not just the headline price. A practical checklist:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Authentication and provenance: What exactly is certified or documented, by whom, and does the record match this object?
- Condition or use evidence: For a card, compare grade and visible condition; for game-used equipment, examine the evidence of use and the claimed connection to a player or event.
- Scarcity data: Check population information where it exists, while noting that a reported count is not a measure of buyer demand.
- Comparable realized sales: Look for completed sales close in item type, condition, provenance, and timing. Explain any material differences instead of relying on the highest record.
- Total costs: Add acquisition charges, verification and grading, shipping, insurance or storage, and plausible selling expenses.
- Exit route: Identify likely resale venues, their terms, and whether there are enough potential buyers to make a timely sale plausible.
For a purchase that only makes sense if the item can be quickly resold at a guide price, the available evidence may not support the assumption. Decide in advance how much of the purchase price you would still consider worthwhile if resale takes longer or returns less than expected.

How should a new collector approach the market?
Start with a category you genuinely understand or want to learn about, rather than chasing an auction record. CFA Institute’s article quotes Jablonski advising new participants: “I recommend that a new collector or a new participant decide where they think they have some sort of information advantage, decide where they think they have a passion, and then pursue that arena most closely.” It also quotes Thornhill: “It’s important to approach something with a plan, but also something that’s meaningful to you. You’ll be happier and get farther that way.”
Set a spending limit that does not depend on future appreciation, keep records of all purchase and sale costs, and take time to verify the item and its market before committing. If the financial case requires a guaranteed resale price, a quick sale, or a particular level of appreciation, the uncertainty of this market makes that case fragile.
