The Sports Illustrated Union said it was “horrified” by November 2023 reporting that articles on the magazine’s website may have been produced using AI and published under fabricated writer identities. The union demanded an explanation and transparency from The Arena Group, which disputed that the articles were AI-generated and said its content supplier, AdVon Commerce, had assured it the work was written and edited by humans. The disputed authorship claims were not independently resolved in the statements and reporting cited here.
What prompted the union’s reaction?
Futurism published its initial report on November 27, 2023. The next day, it reported that the Sports Illustrated Union was “horrified” by the allegations and quoted the union demanding “answers and transparency from Arena Group management about what exactly has been published under the SI name.” The union’s statement was conditional: it said that, “if true,” the reported practices violated its beliefs about journalism. Futurism, November 28, 2023.
The distinction matters: “horrified” described the union’s response to reporting, not a judicial finding or an independently adjudicated conclusion about who wrote the disputed articles.
What did the union say and demand?
In its official statement on November 29, the union said it remained outraged by reporting that The Arena Group, then Sports Illustrated’s operator, had published AI-generated content with fabricated bylines and writer profiles. It said Arena’s response had not adequately explained what happened and that management had not personally taken accountability. Those were the union’s assertions. Sports Illustrated Union, November 29, 2023.
#1 Best Overall
The union called for Arena to:
- Explain how the posts were published and why it partnered with AdVon Commerce.
- Provide a dated timeline covering the partnership, when concerns arose, the investigation, contact from Futurism, any content takedown, and the end of the AdVon contract.
- Include a union representative in the internal investigation.
- Publicly guarantee that future SI editorial work would be performed by humans, with that commitment included in the next union contract.
The union warned it could withhold bylines if management did not meet its demands. It also said: “We demand the company commit to adhering to basic journalistic standards, including not publishing computer-written stories by fake people.” That language appeared in the union’s statement quoted by Futurism on November 28. Futurism, November 28, 2023.
How did The Arena Group respond?
The Arena Group’s account differed from the union’s allegations and Futurism’s reporting. Sports Business Journal reported that an Arena spokesperson said the articles were licensed from AdVon and that AdVon had assured Arena the articles were written and edited by humans. The spokesperson also said some stories appeared under pen names or pseudonyms to protect authors’ privacy. That explanation does not independently establish who wrote the disputed work. Sports Business Journal, November 28, 2023.
Futurism reported that Arena blamed the content on AdVon and rejected the claim that the stories themselves were AI-generated, while sources cited by Futurism said otherwise. The published accounts therefore contain conflicting claims about authorship; the union’s alarm and Arena’s response should not be mistaken for independent verification of either account.
What is known about Sports Illustrated’s publishing arrangements now?
In March 2024, Minute Media took over Sports Illustrated’s print and digital publishing operations under an agreement with Authentic Brands Group, which owns the brand. The Associated Press reported that Arena’s publishing license had been revoked earlier that year after a missed payment. Associated Press, March 18, 2024; Minute Media, March 18, 2024.
Minute’s current company site lists Sports Illustrated among its content brands, and SI’s terms page identifies Sports Publishing Solutions Inc. and affiliates as a service provider. Those pages document the later publishing relationship, but do not establish whether the union’s requested remedies were adopted or what detailed AI policy currently governs SI editorial work. The union characterized SI staff as having upheld high ethical standards “for nearly 70 years.” That is the union’s description of its tradition, not a measured statistic. Sports Illustrated Union, 2023.
Rank #4
The available statements and reports establish that Futurism published allegations, the union demanded answers and specific safeguards, and Arena said AdVon had represented the work as human-written and edited. They do not establish whether the union’s demands were accepted, whether a later contract included the requested human-work guarantee, or the present detailed rules for AI use in SI editorial work.
