Sports betting rules depend on where you are physically located, while federal tax rules apply to gambling winnings regardless of whether a sportsbook sends you a tax form. Check the local age and licensing rules before placing a bet, report all winnings on your federal return, and consult your sportsbook’s current withdrawal terms for timing and verification requirements.

How old do you have to be to bet on sports?

There is no single age limit established here for every U.S. jurisdiction. Check the regulator and licensed sportsbook rules for the state where you will be physically located when placing the wager; living in a state does not necessarily mean you can bet there while elsewhere.

For two state examples, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission’s player FAQ, accessed in 2026, says players must be at least 21. It also says licensed online operators use geolocation: a player need not be a North Carolina resident, but must be in North Carolina to wager with those operators. The FAQ says proxy wagering by an ineligible person is illegal there. Kansas statute K.S.A. 74-8757 bars anyone under 21 from directly or indirectly making a sports wager or otherwise engaging in sports wagering. These examples do not establish the rule in other states.

Do you have to pay taxes on sports betting winnings?

Yes. The IRS treats sports betting winnings as gambling income. Its Topic No. 419 says casual gamblers must report all winnings on Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, including winnings that were not reported on Form W-2G. The IRS also says estimated tax may be required. A missing W-2G does not make winnings nontaxable.

Will I get a W-2G from my sportsbook?

Not for every winning bet. Form W-2G reports certain gambling winnings and federal income tax withheld; whether it applies depends on the type and amount of gambling and, generally, the relationship between winnings and the wager. It is an information and withholding form, not the definition of what counts as taxable income.

The IRS Form W-2G instructions revised in January 2026 describe a sports-wagering reporting condition that includes winnings of at least 300 times the amount wagered, together with the applicable reporting threshold. The instructions also describe regular federal gambling withholding at 24% when qualifying sports-wagering winnings, minus the wager, exceed $5,000 and the winnings are at least 300 times the wager. These conditions do not mean every payout over one fixed amount triggers a form or withholding. Check the IRS instructions for the tax year that applies to your return; thresholds and conditions matter.

What records should you keep for sports betting taxes?

Keep an accurate record of winnings and losses, along with evidence that supports the amounts. IRS Form W-2G instructions revised in January 2026 identify receipts, tickets, statements, or similar saved items as supporting evidence. A dedicated ledger or spreadsheet can help organize the information, but the IRS instructions do not require a particular logbook format.

Save sportsbook statements and other records that substantiate your activity. The IRS instructs taxpayers to report all gambling winnings; this recordkeeping guidance does not itself determine whether a particular loss is deductible or how it should be claimed.

Why is my sportsbook withdrawal taking so long?

There is no universally established U.S. withdrawal timetable, payment-method schedule, or fee policy in the sources cited here. Timing and required steps can depend on the operator, payment method, location, and circumstances of the account. Check the sportsbook’s current cashier or withdrawal terms and the applicable state regulator’s rules. If a request is delayed, review the account for any request for information and contact the operator through its official support channel.

One state-specific protection illustrates why location matters: North Carolina law says a registered player whose account is terminated under specified conditions must be given timely ability to access and withdraw remaining funds. That is not a general processing-time estimate for ordinary withdrawal requests or a rule for every state.

Verification rules also vary by jurisdiction. As a comparison only, the UK Gambling Commission’s guidance says online gambling businesses must check age and identity before gambling and should not wait until withdrawal to request information they could have requested earlier, subject to cases where legal obligations require later information. That is Great Britain regulatory guidance, not U.S. law.
