If your Galaxy phone lags, freezes, or stops responding to taps, start with the built-in checks Samsung recommends: free up storage, close unused background apps, install pending software updates, and restart. Samsung’s support pages describe these as likely causes and recommended actions. They do not publish measured speed gains, so treat each step as something to try, not a guaranteed fix.
What usually causes a slow Galaxy
Samsung’s support guidance lists several possible causes. Any of them may apply to your phone, but the list describes possibilities, not a diagnosis of your device:
- Full storage, where little free space is left for the system to work with.
- Background apps that keep running while you use something else.
- Outdated software, including a pending system update.
- Insufficient available memory when several demanding apps are open at once.
- Temporary system errors, which a restart often clears.
Samsung also links one specific pattern to third-party apps: a slowdown or unwanted ads that began soon after you installed an app. That case gets its own steps below.
Which check addresses which symptom
The checks differ in what they target and in what they may interrupt. This table summarises Samsung’s guidance; where a source does not address a point, the cell says so.

Menus differ by model and software version
Samsung states that setting names, screens, and diagnostic options vary across models, software versions, and countries. Older devices may label the maintenance feature Battery and device care or Device maintenance. If a path below does not match your screen, open Settings and search for the function name, such as “Storage,” “Memory,” or “Diagnostics.”
Work through the basic checks in order
Run these steps in sequence. Stop as soon as the phone responds normally, and check whether the slowdown returns after a day or two of normal use.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. 1. Check storage
- Open Settings > Device care > Storage.
- Review what is using space.
- Delete only the files or apps you no longer need.
Freeing space can help, but Samsung’s pages set no universal free-space target. Avoid clearing everything indiscriminately: the guidance is to review items and remove the unnecessary ones, not to wipe all cached or downloaded content.
2. Clear background activity
- Open Settings > Device care > Memory.
- Tap Clean now to stop selected unused background apps.
- If you prefer, open the Recent apps screen and close the apps you are not using, then see whether the phone responds more quickly.
Closing apps can interrupt what they do in the background. An app that normally syncs or sends alerts may do so later once you reopen it, which is worth knowing before you close messaging or navigation apps. Samsung’s statement on the topic is that “Apps running in the background may affect device performance and cause slowdowns.” That is a cause to test, not proof that closing apps solves every problem.

Run diagnostics
- Samsung Members: open the Samsung Members app and use its Phone diagnostics test. Test names and the options offered vary by model and app version.
- Device care: on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later, open Settings > Device care > Diagnostics. Older software may not include this option.
Diagnostics can indicate whether a component is failing, but they do not repair anything, so note any warnings before you change settings.

Check for suspicious apps after an install
If the slowdown or unwanted ads began after you installed a third-party app, uninstall any app you do not recognise or no longer use. Then open Settings > Device care and use the scan option to check for threats. Samsung’s guidance is to rely on Device care for this rather than installing a separate cleanup app.

Know when to contact Samsung
Samsung’s pages do not set a repair threshold or name a replacement part for slowdowns, so the decision depends on the diagnostic results and on whether the problem survives the checks above. If diagnostics flag a hardware fault, or the phone stays unresponsive, contact Samsung Support. Have your exact model number and software version ready; you can find the software version under Settings > About phone > Software information.
