The available evidence does not identify which speech-to-text apps failed for the author’s grandmother, what caused the failures, or what the author changed to fix them. Those details should not be guessed. Research does show that automatic speech recognition (ASR) accuracy can depend on how closely a system’s training data matches a speaker and task—but it does not establish that age alone explains any one person’s transcription problems.
What is known about the app and the fix?
The title describes a personal engineering story, but the available account does not name the application, platform, failure examples, code changes, or evaluation results. Without those specifics, it is not possible to say what broke or how it was fixed, or to compare the apps involved.
To establish a fix, a useful account would show the same recordings transcribed before and after the change, explain whether the audio or a person corrected the transcripts, and state how accuracy was measured. It would also identify the language, device and microphone, recording environment, and whether the system adapted to the speaker’s own data. These details distinguish a genuine improvement from a change that merely works on one sample.

Does age make speech harder for speech-to-text apps?
Not by itself, based on the evidence cited here. ASR systems recognize patterns in audio, and a mismatch between their training data and a speaker’s voice or speaking patterns may affect accuracy. That possibility is different from proving that older age caused a particular app to fail.

A 2012 study of 19 older adults with age-related hearing loss tested human listeners—not speech-to-text software. In quiet conditions, listeners’ speech-recognition performance did not differ significantly depending on whether the phrases came from younger or older speakers. However, listeners reported greater effort when listening to older speakers. The distinction matters: perceived effort in human listening does not demonstrate an ASR failure. The study’s PubMed record reproduces the authors’ observation that natural signal-quality degradations may require greater listening effort for older individuals with hearing loss.
What research says about ASR and older speakers
Systems trained on other populations may face a mismatch
A 2023 study examined ASR for adults aged 80 and older with possible cognitive impairment. The authors reported that adult-trained open-source systems were susceptible to acoustic mismatch on this target population. They used 12 hours of training recordings from people in the target group and found that transfer learning improved performance in their experiment. An additional attention-based approach produced a further 1.58% absolute improvement over the transfer-learning model. These figures describe that paper’s systems and experiment, not a guaranteed gain for other apps or speakers. Read the 2023 study.

Accuracy differences are not uniform across older adults
A CHI 2026 paper evaluated 83 older adults across cognitive groups and reported higher ASR errors for participants with dementia. In that study, intensity, voice quality, and pause ratio predicted accuracy. The result concerns the participants and systems in that evaluation; it should not be generalized to all older adults or treated as proof that a person’s age or diagnosis determines how an app will perform. See the CHI 2026 paper.

Preprocessing has helped in a particular experiment
A 2016 paper reported a 12% recognition-accuracy increase after its tested preprocessing steps for elderly speech. The steps included changes involving speaking rate, intersyllabic pauses, and formant-band energy. This is a result from one experiment, not evidence that every app will improve by 12%, and it is not a reason to ask a user to change their natural speaking style. Read the 2016 paper.

How to judge a claimed speech-to-text fix
A convincing explanation connects a specific failure to a change and tests that change fairly. For a family member’s recordings, compare the original and changed system using the same audio and transcription task. Keep the speaker, language, microphone and device, environment, and error measure consistent, then report whether transcripts were manually corrected and whether the system was adapted using that speaker’s data. Without the original story’s technical details and test results, the fix in the title cannot be independently described or assessed.
Older-voice ASR has been an established research topic: a 2011 doctoral thesis specifically examined automatic speech recognition for ageing voices. That context supports the broader point that age-related speech characteristics have drawn technical study; it does not identify the cause or solution in this particular story. See the University of Edinburgh thesis record.
