To keep a voice conversation from being used for AI training, disabling training alone is not enough. You must also check raw-audio sharing, chat or activity history, memory and feedback controls. ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot handle recordings differently: one may retain voice clips with a transcript, another may hold chats briefly even with history off, and another normally keeps only a transcript. Use the provider-specific steps below, then delete existing conversations and memories separately.
What you must control separately
Speech assistants create several data objects from one spoken exchange: an audio recording, a speech-to-text transcript, the conversation record in your history, inferred memories or personalization data, and (if you submit a rating) a feedback package. A switch that affects one object does not automatically affect the others.
- Model-training use: determines whether new conversations may improve or train models. An opt-out usually affects future activity, not material already reviewed or retained.
- Raw-audio sharing: controls whether clips are supplied for training or service improvement. Voice and video often have their own consent switches.
- History or activity: controls whether a transcript remains visible in your account. Turning it off may still allow short-term processing for safety and response delivery.
- Memory and personalization: controls facts, preferences and inferred details saved for later conversations. Deleting a chat does not necessarily erase a separate memory entry.
- Feedback: a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written report can create a separate review copy. Voice may be retained temporarily even when ordinary voice calls are not.
For a sensitive conversation, use the service’s temporary-chat option where available, disable training and audio-sharing before speaking, and delete the resulting chat or activity afterward. Do not assume that archiving is deletion.

These figures describe different objects, so they are not a ranking of which company keeps data for the shortest time. ChatGPT’s period concerns stored clips, Gemini’s concerns future chats when activity is off, and Copilot’s 48-hour period concerns feedback audio.

ChatGPT Voice: settings and deletion steps
Disable training and clip sharing
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone. New conversations are then excluded from model improvement, but previously saved chats remain in your history until you delete them.
- In the same Data controls area, leave Include your audio recordings off. Leave Include your video recordings off as well if you use Advanced Voice video. These are explicit sharing choices for associated clips.
OpenAI distinguishes Standard voice from Live and Advanced Voice. Standard voice audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it for training. Clips from Live and Advanced Voice conversations, and video clips from Advanced Voice, are stored with the transcript shown in chat; the published retention period is the 30-day period in the comparison table.
Use Temporary Chat for a one-off sensitive exchange
Start a Temporary Chat before you begin speaking. OpenAI says temporary chats do not appear in history and do not create or update memories while they remain temporary. This is a history and memory measure, not a substitute for checking the training and audio-sharing switches.
Delete, do not archive
When an existing voice conversation must be removed, open the conversation menu and choose Delete. Archiving only removes the item from the sidebar. Deleting a chat starts deletion of its associated audio or video clips within the stated clip-retention window, although OpenAI lists security, safety and legal exceptions. If you need a complete cleanup, inspect saved memories separately after deleting the chat.
Google Gemini Live: activity, audio improvement and memory
Turn off Keep Activity
- Open Gemini Apps Activity from your Google account or Gemini settings.
- Choose the control for Keep Activity and switch it off.
- Confirm the change and review the deletion options for existing activity.
Google says future chats with Keep Activity off will not appear in Activity and will not be used to train its AI models unless you choose to send feedback. Google still saves those chats for a limited processing period so Gemini can generate a response, handle feedback and maintain safety protections; the published period is 72 hours.

Check the separate audio-improvement consent
In Gemini Apps Activity, find the option allowing Google to use audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares to improve services. It is off by default, but verify the setting rather than relying on the default, especially after changing accounts or devices. This control is separate from Keep Activity and from Gemini for Home. Turning it off stops future improvement use; it cannot stop Gemini from receiving the audio required to understand a request and protect the service.
Delete activity and review provider access
Use the activity deletion command for older Gemini conversations. Deletion from your account does not remove material that service providers already reviewed and disconnected from your account. Google says such disconnected material can remain for up to three years, so account-history deletion is not proof that every derivative review copy vanished immediately.
Separate memory from activity
Open Gemini’s Memory or personalization controls and remove facts or preferences you do not want retained. A deleted activity item can leave a separately stored memory. For information that should not influence later answers, use Gemini’s Temporary Chat and confirm that the conversation is actually marked temporary before sharing details.

Microsoft Copilot Voice: personal-account controls
Disable both conversation-training switches
- Open the profile or account menu in the personal Copilot app.
- Enter the privacy or data-controls page.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations as a separate step.
- Turn off Personalization and memory if Copilot should not remember details or use Microsoft usage data to personalize responses.
Microsoft says the training opt-out excludes future conversation activity from training. It does not exclude every other use: product improvement, advertising, safety, security and compliance processing can follow different rules.

Understand what is stored
Microsoft’s voice FAQ says normal Copilot voice operation stores no user or Copilot audio. The text transcript is stored and managed like a text conversation. If you enable feedback, however, audio connected to that feedback is temporarily stored and deleted after the published 48-hour period.
Delete history and verify your account type
Use Copilot’s conversation-history deletion control when you need to remove prior transcripts. The cited personal-account experience says history can be retained for 18 months, so do not treat an empty recent list as evidence that older records are already gone.
Check which Copilot you are using before applying these instructions. Microsoft labels the privacy-controls guidance as an older personal-app experience following the August 18, 2026 update. Microsoft 365 Copilot with a work or school account follows enterprise controls set by an administrator, so a personal-account switch may be unavailable or may not govern organizational retention.

- Identify the account: personal, work or school accounts can expose different settings and retention policies.
- Disable model training: switch off the general conversation-training control.
- Disable voice-specific sharing: turn off audio, video, Live-media or voice-training consent independently.
- Disable memory and personalization: remove existing memories, not just the toggle that prevents new ones.
- Start a temporary session: use Temporary Chat or its equivalent before discussing sensitive material.
- Give no feedback: ratings and reports can open a separate review path; if feedback is essential, assume it may create a temporary copy.
- Delete the conversation: choose Delete rather than Archive, then check the provider’s activity or history page for remaining entries.
- Recheck after an app update: labels and defaults can change, and a work or school policy can override a personal setting.
How to interpret retention statements
Audio retention is not transcript retention
A provider can delete the waveform while retaining the words produced by speech recognition. If your concern is what was said, deleting or limiting audio alone is insufficient; inspect conversation history, export tools and memory.
Processing windows are not promises of immediate erasure
A short window may cover operational copies used to answer a request, detect abuse or investigate a failure. Provider-reviewed or legally preserved material can follow a longer schedule. Read the exception language next to the number instead of comparing headline durations.
Opting out is usually prospective
Training switches generally govern new activity after the change. They do not automatically retrain models, erase an already reviewed sample or remove a transcript from your account. Delete older activity and memories separately, then avoid sending feedback that would create a new review record.
Common problems and fixes
The setting is missing
Confirm that you are in the correct app and account. Gemini’s activity controls, Copilot’s personal-account controls and enterprise Microsoft 365 controls are not interchangeable. Sign out of a managed work profile and check whether an administrator policy is enforcing the option.

History disappeared but a detail still appears in answers
Look for a memory or personalization entry. Chat deletion can remove the visible transcript while leaving a separately saved preference. Delete that memory and start a temporary conversation for future sensitive topics.
You disabled training but still see a microphone indicator
Training consent does not disable the microphone. The assistant must capture and process audio to produce a response. To stop capture entirely, exit voice mode, revoke microphone permission at the operating-system level, or do not start a voice session.
You sent feedback by mistake
Delete the associated conversation and avoid further feedback submissions. Microsoft documents a temporary feedback-audio path; other providers may retain reviewed material under their safety, security or legal exceptions, so account deletion cannot guarantee instant removal of every copy.
Bottom line
For ChatGPT, switch off general training and audio or video sharing, use Temporary Chat, and delete rather than archive. For Gemini, turn off Keep Activity and separately keep audio-improvement consent off, then clear activity and memory. For personal Copilot, disable both training switches and personalization, remember that normal voice audio is not stored but feedback audio is temporary, and verify that you are not using an enterprise account. These controls reduce future use; they do not make a spoken conversation anonymous or erase every provider-side copy immediately.
