If Spectrum internet is down, first check for an outage or maintenance affecting your service address. If none is reported, inspect the modem’s power and cable connections, then restart supported non-fiber equipment. If the modem is online but Wi-Fi is weak, test near the router or over Ethernet to narrow down the problem.
1. Check whether Spectrum is down in your area
Check Spectrum’s outage information or the My Spectrum app for the affected service location before troubleshooting equipment. Spectrum says an outage or maintenance can leave equipment offline, even when the home setup has not changed. An outage check needs your service location; a general search cannot establish whether there is a live outage at your address. Spectrum’s equipment troubleshooting guide and its Internet support page provide official support paths.
- If an outage is reported: Follow Spectrum’s restoration guidance and wait for service to return before changing equipment.
- If no outage is listed: Continue with the connection checks below. A missing outage notice does not by itself identify the cause.
2. Identify whether you have cable or fiber service
The connection path and troubleshooting instructions differ. Spectrum’s general offline-equipment steps specifically caution fiber customers not to manually troubleshoot using that generic procedure.

Cable internet
In a typical cable setup, coax connects the wall outlet to the modem. Ethernet then connects the modem to the router’s Internet port, or directly to a computer for a wired test. Spectrum’s Wi-Fi 6 self-installation instructions show these connections.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Fiber internet
Spectrum fiber installations use a different connection path, such as Ethernet from the router to a wall plate or the home’s optical network unit (ONU). Use the Spectrum Fiber connection instructions or contact support rather than applying the general cable-equipment restart procedure.
3. Check power and cables before restarting
- Make sure the modem and router power cords are firmly seated at both ends and that the equipment is switched on.
- For cable service, check that the coax cable is secure at the wall outlet and modem.
- Check that the Ethernet cable runs from the modem to the router’s Internet port. If testing a computer directly, connect it to the modem as appropriate for your setup.
- If practical, test with a wired computer connection. This helps distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from a modem or service connection problem.
Reseat existing cables before considering a replacement. A damaged cable may need replacing, but an outage is not fixed by buying new hardware. Spectrum’s setup guide identifies the coax and Ethernet connections used in its cable installation.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
4. Restart supported non-fiber equipment
For general non-fiber Spectrum internet equipment, Spectrum’s equipment guide instructs customers to disconnect power—or remove the battery where applicable—wait at least 60 seconds, and reconnect. Follow any model-specific startup instructions, and do not use this generic manual procedure for fiber equipment. Spectrum’s guide explains the restart steps and fiber caution.
Recommended Free Tools
- Disconnect power from the supported modem and router. If a device has a removable battery, follow Spectrum’s instructions for that equipment.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the equipment and allow it time to start and reconnect. Avoid repeatedly unplugging it while it is starting.
Startup time depends on the equipment. In Spectrum’s Wi-Fi 6 setup instructions, the modem usually takes about 2–5 minutes to connect, and the router can take up to 10 minutes to show ready status. These timings apply to that setup guidance, not necessarily every model.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
5. If internet works but Wi-Fi is poor
If the modem appears connected but devices have weak or intermittent Wi-Fi, test close to the router. Restart the affected phone, computer, or other wireless device, and try Ethernet if available. If a wired connection works well while Wi-Fi does not, the issue is more likely within the wireless connection or coverage than the modem’s internet link; this test does not prove a specific cause.
Spectrum recommends placing the router centrally and away from household electronics that can interfere with Wi-Fi, including baby monitors, microwaves, and wireless headsets. See the Wi-Fi 6 setup guide for placement advice.
