SparkyLinux 7.4 was a June 11, 2024 update to the stable Sparky 7 “Orion Belt” line, based on Debian 12 “Bookworm.” It refreshed packages, added APTus support for installing Debian backports kernels, and shipped desktop and minimal images for several architectures. It is a historical release, not the current SparkyLinux version.
What’s new in SparkyLinux 7.4?
The project’s release announcement, dated June 11, 2024, describes Sparky 7.4 as the fourth quarterly update in the stable Sparky 7 line. Its package list reflects a Debian and Sparky repository snapshot from June 9, 2024, so these versions describe the release at that time—not software versions to expect from a current installation.
Kernel and application updates
The release summary listed Linux 6.1.90 LTS for PC images and Linux 6.6.31 LTS for ARM images. Sparky repositories also offered kernels 6.9.4, 6.6.32-LTS, 6.1.92-LTS, and 5.15.160-LTS; those repository options should not be confused with the kernel listed for the PC release image. The project’s announcement gives the SparkyLinux 7.4 release details.

The publisher found an error shortly before release and recreated the Xfce and MATE ISO images as version 7.4.1. It described this as an image correction; it did not say that every existing Sparky 7.4 installation required repair.

- UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS for compatible x86-64 PCs.

- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
Do you need to reinstall to get Sparky 7.4?
No. The release announcement told existing Sparky 7 users to keep the system up to date and said there was no need to reinstall for version 7.4. That guidance concerns moving an existing Sparky 7 installation to the point update; installing from an ISO is a separate choice.
GRUB and os-prober caveat
The announcement also warned that os-prober does not run by default to detect other bootable partitions, and a later GRUB package update may override the supplied setting. For users who specifically want GRUB to probe for other operating systems, the publisher’s workaround is to add GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false to /etc/default/grub and then run sudo update-grub as root. Changing bootloader configuration can affect which systems appear in the boot menu; understand the consequences and check that you can recover your boot setup before applying the change.

Is SparkyLinux 7.4 still current?
No. Sparky 7.4’s June 2024 package snapshot is dated history. The stable 7 line later received Sparky 7.8, announced July 15, 2025, with PC kernel 6.1.140-LTS among its listed changes. Sparky’s stable download page lists Sparky 8.4, announced in August 2026 and based on Debian 13 “Trixie.”
The project’s homepage lists Sparky 2026.09 “Tiamat,” announced September 23, 2026, as its semi-rolling release based on Debian “Forky” testing. That is a separate branch, not the direct stable successor to Sparky 7.4. Choose between the newer stable Sparky 8 line and the semi-rolling branch according to the release model you want; the 7.4 version list is not a guide to their current packages.
