A 102-year-old woman died after flooding inundated her home in Madrigueras, Albacete, on Friday, 2 October 2026. Spain’s Civil Protection authority warned of very strong, persistent showers and storms in the eastern and northeastern peninsula and the Balearic Islands through at least Sunday, 4 October, with sudden local flooding possible. The danger and timing vary by location; check live official alerts before travelling or going near floodwater.
What happened in Madrigueras
Floodwater inundated Madrigueras in Albacete on Friday, 2 October. RTVE reported that a 102-year-old woman died at home, where water reportedly reached one metre. RTVE, citing the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, reported rainfall of 142 litres per square metre and about 90 rescues, mainly from affected homes. The regional government activated METEOCAM at operational level 1, according to the report. RTVE
The rainfall and rescue figures are reports attributed to the regional government; they are specific to this incident, not a nationwide storm total.
Where and when severe weather was forecast
In a notice dated 2 October, Spain’s Civil Protection authority said very strong, persistent showers and storms could affect the eastern and northeastern peninsula and the Balearic Islands through at least Sunday, 4 October. A separate notice issued on 30 September described a broader episode running from Thursday, 1 October, through at least Monday, 5 October, and said the Balearic Islands could be affected, particularly from late Friday. These dates describe the warnings visible at that time, not a forecast that remains valid indefinitely. Check the AEMET forecast and warnings for your specific town and the latest alert status.

Alzira, Valencia region
EFE reported up to 143 litres per square metre in four hours in Alzira on 2 October, including nearly 97 litres in one hour, citing local meteorological measurements. Some streets flooded after drainage collectors were temporarily overwhelmed. These are Alzira figures and should not be conflated with the rainfall reported in Madrigueras. EFE

Why sudden flooding is a concern
Civil Protection warned: “Los chubascos podrán dar lugar a inundaciones locales súbitas y repentinas en zonas bajas, arroyos y ramblas.” In English: showers could cause sudden local floods in low-lying areas, streams and ramblas—normally dry river channels.
