SpaceX unveiled its new extravehicular activity (EVA) suit on May 4, 2024, and the Polaris Dawn crew completed the spacewalk on September 12, 2024. The flight demonstrated the suit during a specific Crew Dragon mission; it did not establish that the design is qualified for lunar or Mars work, or for use with other spacecraft.
What SpaceX unveiled
The Polaris Program described the EVA suit as an evolution of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon intravehicular activity (IVA) suit—the pressure suit worn inside a spacecraft. The EVA version added features intended to support movement and temperature management during work in vacuum.
- Greater mobility: The suit was designed to let astronauts move more readily during an EVA.
- Helmet display and camera: The helmet included a heads-up display (HUD) and camera.
- Thermal management: New textiles were intended to help manage temperature.
- Materials: SpaceX said the design incorporated materials from Falcon’s interstage and Dragon’s trunk.
SpaceX also described scalability across different body types as a design goal. Its broader ambition to develop suits for future long-duration missions, including lunar or Mars missions, is an ambition—not a qualification demonstrated by Polaris Dawn. Polaris Program’s May 4, 2024 announcement

The crew completed the spacewalk on September 12, 2024. The Polaris Program called it the first commercial astronaut spacewalk. That description is specific to the mission; it should not be read as saying it was the first spacewalk of any kind.

Preparation began after launch with a two-day prebreathe process. The program said this gradually lowered cabin pressure while raising oxygen levels to reduce decompression-sickness risk. The crew then donned their suits, performed leak checks, and vented Dragon’s cabin to vacuum before opening the hatch. The program reported that all four crew members were exposed to space vacuum at the same time.
- Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis exited Dragon and spent approximately 20 minutes conducting mobility, thermal-system, and “Skywalker” mobility-aid tests.
- Scott “Kidd” Poteet and Anna Menon remained inside and monitored support systems.
- After Isaacman and Gillis returned and the hatch was closed, Dragon was repressurized. The crew confirmed cabin oxygen and pressure before removing their suits.
The overall operation lasted approximately two hours, including preparation and vehicle operations; that figure is not the time the astronauts spent outside the spacecraft. The completion report placed Dragon in an elliptical orbit of 190 × 700 km during the operation. The program’s retrospective mission page gives 740 km as the highest altitude at which the spacewalk was completed; an earlier announcement gave an approximate planned altitude of 700 km. These figures describe the EVA context, not the mission’s peak apogee of 1,408.1 km. Polaris Program’s September 12, 2024 completion report · Polaris Dawn mission summary

How the suit connected to Dragon
NASA’s Office of Inspector General says the astronauts were attached to Crew Dragon by an umbilical that provided life-support features for the EVA. This is important context: although Dragon’s cabin was vented to vacuum for the operation, the available account does not establish that the Polaris Dawn suit was a fully self-contained life-support system.

The umbilical also makes clear why the flight should be understood as a suit-and-vehicle demonstration, not proof that the suit can operate with another spacecraft. What the flight tested—and what it did not establish
The Polaris Program said the crew worked with SpaceX engineers on development over two years and that the suits underwent hundreds of hours of testing, including pressure- and vacuum-chamber tests. The program did not publish an exact total. In flight, the crew evaluated mobility, thermal systems, and Dragon’s Skywalker mobility aid. The available mission account does not provide a performance score or a like-for-like comparison with another suit.
NASA’s next-generation spacesuit procurement is a separate effort. NASA OIG describes the SpaceX design as an upgraded version of the company’s Crew Dragon IVA suit demonstrated on Polaris Dawn; that does not make it NASA’s xEVAS suit or show that it met NASA’s procurement requirements. Nor does the Dragon flight qualify the suit for lunar surface operations or establish compatibility with other vehicles.

What the crew said during the EVA
During the spacewalk, mission commander Jared Isaacman said: “SpaceX, back at home we all have a lot of work to do, but from here, Earth sure looks like a perfect world.” The Polaris Program’s completion report attributes the statement to Isaacman during the EVA.

The same report attributes this characterization to Stu Keech, SpaceX’s vice president of Dragon: “Today’s EVA was the first time four humans were exposed to the vacuum of space while completing the first-ever commercial astronaut spacewalk from a commercially-produced spacecraft in commercially-produced extravehicular activity suits.” This is SpaceX’s description of the event, not an unqualified claim that it was the first spacewalk in history.
