SpaceX has the momentum edge, but it has not won the race. On September 28, 2026, Starship reached orbit and deployed advanced Starlink satellites before ending the flight early and splashing down in the Pacific. That is a major development milestone, not proof of routine, fully reusable service. Blue Origin has already demonstrated an orbital New Glenn mission and first-stage recovery, but a May 2026 hot-fire anomaly damaged launch infrastructure and pushed the company toward a planned return by the end of 2026. The fairest verdict is therefore narrow: SpaceX leads on the latest headline progress; the longer race, especially Artemis, remains open.

What does “winning” the new space race mean?

There is no honest single score. SpaceX and Blue Origin are flying different vehicles at different stages, so launch totals, price-per-launch figures, or cost-per-kilogram rankings would compare unlike programs. A useful assessment separates four questions:

  • Operational momentum: Which company is producing the newest, most consequential flight results?
  • Reuse demonstrated: Which parts have actually flown, landed, and been recovered—not merely been designed for reuse?
  • System maturity: Can the vehicle repeat missions, integrate payloads, and operate its ground infrastructure reliably?
  • Lunar progress: Which provider is reducing the technical and schedule risks that stand between today’s tests and crewed Artemis landings?

Using those tests, SpaceX is ahead in recent momentum, while Blue Origin owns a significant demonstrated recovery milestone and still has a credible lunar role.

Question SpaceX Blue Origin What the record supports
Newest major orbital result Starship reached orbit on September 28, 2026, delivered advanced Starlink satellites, then ended the flight early and splashed down. New Glenn’s second mission, on November 13, 2025, deployed NASA’s twin ESCAPADE spacecraft and recovered its first stage. The newest headline milestone favors SpaceX; New Glenn’s booster landing is a separately demonstrated achievement.
Reuse demonstrated The September 2026 flight did not establish routine full-system reuse. First-stage recovery has been demonstrated; the mission record does not claim a reused upper stage. Design intent and proven reuse are different measures.
Immediate constraint Orbital propellant transfer, schedule progress, and repeated Starship operations remain major hurdles identified by NASA oversight bodies. A May 28, 2026 hot-fire anomaly damaged launch-support infrastructure; reconstruction and a revised integration approach are under way. Both programs face material technical and infrastructure risk.
NASA lunar position Starship is one of NASA’s Human Landing System providers. Blue Moon is the other provider; NASA also identifies New Glenn as a launcher for lunar missions. Artemis planning still involves both companies.

SpaceX: the strongest recent momentum, with a large operational gap to close

What Starship achieved on September 28, 2026

The Associated Press reported that Starship Flight 14 reached orbit for the first time and released advanced Starlink satellites. The vehicle then ended its mission early and splashed down in the Pacific. Reaching orbit with a payload is a consequential development step because it demonstrates more of the vehicle’s intended mission profile than a suborbital test.

It is not the same as proving a reusable launch service. The flight did not establish a routine cadence, a recovered and reflown complete vehicle, or an operational propellant-transfer chain. Those are separate milestones that still have to be demonstrated.

Why Starship’s architecture is demanding

NASA and the Government Accountability Office identify orbital propellant transfer as a central challenge for the Starship Human Landing System. Before a lunar Starship can depart low Earth orbit with landing propellant, multiple Starship vehicles must support storage and transfer operations in orbit. That creates a campaign-level dependency: launch reliability, tanker operations, cryogenic-fluid management, rendezvous, transfer, and the lander flight must all work together.

Starship is designed for full reuse, but design capacity should not be counted as demonstrated performance. The September flight moved the program forward; it did not erase the engineering and scheduling work that NASA’s oversight reviews describe.

Blue Origin: a real booster-recovery milestone followed by a serious setback

New Glenn’s demonstrated result

Blue Origin’s New Glenn mission record says its second flight on November 13, 2025, deployed NASA’s twin ESCAPADE spacecraft and landed the reusable first stage on the Jacklyn recovery vessel. That landing is direct evidence that Blue Origin can recover the booster on an orbital mission. The record does not say that New Glenn’s upper stage has been reused, so the achievement should be described precisely as first-stage recovery.

The May 2026 hot-fire anomaly

Blue Origin says a May 28, 2026 New Glenn hot-fire anomaly damaged the lightning tower, transporter-erector, and hydraulic cylinders. The company reports that recovery and debris removal are complete, reconstruction has started, and it is targeting a return to flight by the end of 2026. That date is a company plan, not a completed launch.

The incident changes how New Glenn’s progress should be read. Blue Origin has a flown orbital vehicle and a recovered booster, but its near-term cadence depends on rebuilding ground systems, completing testing, and demonstrating that the revised launch process works.

Artemis keeps the race open

Artemis III is planned as an Earth-orbit test campaign

NASA’s July 2026 Artemis explanation describes Artemis III as a low-Earth-orbit test campaign rather than an immediate lunar landing. Commercial rockets are expected to carry the lander test articles, while Orion and its crew launch on the Space Launch System. NASA says SpaceX plans to use Starship Version 3 as the basis for its future Human Landing System test, while Blue Origin plans to test its HLS crew cabin.

NASA Human Landing System program manager Steve Creech summarized the split approach: “Each human landing system provider has taken a different approach to the Artemis III mission.” The plan calls for rendezvous and docking tests involving both providers’ systems, so an Artemis outcome cannot fairly be declared for one company before those tests occur.

Schedules remain unsettled

NASA’s Office of Inspector General reported that lander-development challenges will delay planned Artemis dates. A 2026 Government Accountability Office assessment likewise cites SpaceX’s propellant-transfer and schedule challenges, Blue Origin’s May test explosion and pad redesign, and risks in cryogenic storage and transfer. These are oversight findings about risk and progress, not predictions that either company will certainly fail.

Different lunar logistics, similar cryogenic difficulty

Starship’s lunar plan requires propellant to be transferred among multiple Starship vehicles in low Earth orbit. Blue Origin’s Artemis V concept uses a transporter and refuelers to aggregate propellant for Blue Moon. The architectures differ, but both depend on storing and moving cryogenic propellants, an area the Government Accountability Office identifies as technically difficult.

New Glenn’s role beyond the current setback

NASA announced in July 2026 that Blue Origin will conduct New Glenn second-stage hot-fire testing at Stennis Space Center’s B-2 stand, targeted to begin in fall 2026. NASA says the arrangement supports future lunar missions and identifies New Glenn as a launch vehicle for missions intended to land on the Moon. Testing at Stennis is an announced preparation step; no future lunar mission has flown because of it.

Who leads each part of the race?

  • Latest visible momentum: SpaceX. Starship’s first reported orbital success with satellite deployment is the newest major event.
  • Demonstrated orbital booster recovery: Blue Origin. New Glenn’s November 2025 mission landed its first stage, a capability that must be credited independently of Starship’s design goals.
  • Full-system reuse: neither has proved it. Starship’s September 2026 flight did not demonstrate routine full reuse, and New Glenn’s published mission record does not claim upper-stage reuse.
  • Artemis position: unresolved. NASA’s plan involves both providers, and lander development and cryogenic-transfer risks still affect the schedule.

What evidence would change the verdict?

SpaceX would turn momentum into a durable lead by repeating orbital Starship missions, recovering and reflighting the system, and demonstrating reliable on-orbit propellant transfer. Blue Origin would close the gap by returning New Glenn to flight after the May anomaly, sustaining a launch cadence, and progressing from second-stage testing to repeatable lunar-system demonstrations.

Until those results arrive, “winner” is too strong. As of September 30, 2026, SpaceX is ahead on recent momentum; Blue Origin remains a serious competitor with a proven New Glenn first-stage recovery and a still-active Artemis pathway.
