Yes, SpaceX has announced early Starship Mars customers or partners, but no public announcement identifies a flight-numbered manifest for the first Mars flight. The clearest reported payload agreement is with Italy’s space agency, ASI. Entrepreneur Chun Wang is leading a separately announced private Mars flyby. NASA has studied Mars communications services with SpaceX and made Starship eligible for future launch competitions, but neither action confirms NASA as a customer on Starship’s first Mars mission.
Who is connected to early Starship Mars missions?
| Organization or person | Mission type | What has been announced | Schedule and payload or people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italian Space Agency (ASI) | Payload delivery | Space.com reported that ASI president Teodoro Valente announced an agreement with SpaceX to fly Italian experiments on Starship’s first commercial Mars flights. | No flight number, target date, experiment list, price, or signed contract details are established in the report. |
| Chun Wang | Private Mars flyby | SpaceX announced a private Starship mission to Mars led by entrepreneur Chun Wang. | Wang described it as a flyby. SpaceX gave no target date or year, and no other passengers were identified. |
| NASA Mars-relay study | Study of possible Mars communications services | NASA selected SpaceX in 2024 to study adapting Earth-orbit communication satellites for Mars relay services. | A study is not a booked Mars payload or flight. NASA said the studies could lead to future proposals, but do not constitute a NASA commitment. |
| NASA Launch Services II (NLS II) | Potential future launch procurement | NASA added Starship to the offerings under its NLS II contract in 2025, allowing it to compete for future NASA launch missions. | The listing does not assign Starship a Mars mission or payload. The NLS II ordering period runs through June 2030. |
What does ASI’s reported agreement establish?
ASI is the clearest publicly reported institutional customer tied directly to early commercial Starship Mars flights: its announced role is to send Italian experiments. But the public account does not identify which flight would carry them or disclose the payload manifest, price, or contract terms. It therefore supports saying that an agreement was reported, not that a specific first Mars flight is fully booked or that a particular amount has been paid.
What is Chun Wang’s Starship Mars mission?
SpaceX announced a private Mars mission led by entrepreneur Chun Wang, who said it would be a flyby: the mission would pass Mars rather than being described as a landing. No target launch date or year was announced, and SpaceX did not identify other passengers. Wang said the mission would “light the fire” and build momentum; those remarks express its ambition, not a published schedule or passenger list.

Not on the basis of the announcements described here. NASA’s 2024 Mars-relay work was a study of potential communications services, while the 2025 NLS II listing is a route through which Starship may compete for future launch work. Neither specifies a Mars flight assignment. NASA’s own description of the study program is explicit: “These studies could potentially lead to future requests for proposals but do not constitute a NASA commitment.”

What the 2024 Mars-relay study involved
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory selected nine companies for 12 studies in 2024. Each study award was $200,000 to $300,000, and the study period was 12 weeks. Those are figures for the study program—not Starship launch prices or amounts paid for a Mars mission. NASA Mars Exploration Program director Eric Ianson said, “Now is the right time for NASA to begin looking at how public-private partnerships could support science at Mars in the coming decades.”
Why “the first flight to Mars” is not a settled manifest
The announcements describe different activities: ASI’s reported experiment delivery on early commercial Mars flights and Wang’s privately led flyby. They do not identify the same mission, publish a flight-numbered payload manifest, or establish which one would be Starship’s first Mars flight. Until a mission assignment and manifest are made public, “first flight” should be treated as an informal description rather than a confirmed booking slot.
