South Korean robotics company DIDEN Robotics says its Spider 30 can walk across steel floors, climb vertical steel walls and work upside down on steel ceilings. The quadruped is designed for shipyard work such as welding and inspection, carrying task equipment with a stated payload capacity of 30 kg. Those are manufacturer specifications and reported shipyard demonstrations—not proof of independently measured long-term performance or safety gains.
What is the Spider 30?
The Spider 30 is an industrial quadruped work robot from DIDEN Robotics, built for steel-heavy structures such as the inside of ship blocks. Rather than being a general-purpose consumer robot, it is designed to carry task equipment—including welding or inspection modules—and move across obstacles and curved steel surfaces. DIDEN’s product overview describes the robot and its intended shipyard applications.
How can it climb steel walls and ceilings?
DIDEN says Spider 30 uses electro-permanent magnets (EPMs) in its feet. A brief electrical pulse switches the magnets between holding and release states; once switched, the magnetic state remains without continuous power. The company says it holds a commercial license for the underlying technology and has adapted the system for rough industrial steel surfaces. These are DIDEN’s descriptions of its design, not independent test findings. DIDEN’s technical account discusses the system.

DIDEN says its locomotion system monitors foot contact, magnetic holding force and posture as it plans movement and routes. It also describes reinforcement-learning locomotion policies trained in simulation and transferred to the physical robot. The company has not provided independent performance evaluations for these capabilities in the cited material.

What can it carry and do?
The stated payload is 30 kg, described by DIDEN and Korean technology outlet ETNews as capacity for work equipment. Intended tasks include shipyard welding and inspection, using suitable task modules. A payload figure alone does not specify how the robot performs with every module or under every operating condition.
| Capability | What is reported | Evidence context |
|---|---|---|
| Payload | 30 kg | Manufacturer specification; also reported by ETNews in 2026. |
| Surfaces | Steel floors, vertical walls, ceilings and curved steel structures | Intended operating environment described by DIDEN. |
| Tasks | Welding and inspection with task equipment | Applications described by DIDEN and ETNews. |
What is known about shipyard testing and deployment?
ETNews reported on September 30, 2026, that the robot’s movement had been tested in an actual shipyard with task equipment mounted. That is a reported test account; it does not provide a quantified independent evaluation of output, uptime or safety.

DIDEN says Spider 30 has completed field deployment at major Korean shipyards and that welds made by the robot have been applied to vessels in production. These deployment and production-use details are company claims, reported in its April 2026 account. They indicate claimed use beyond a lab demonstration, but do not establish how long the robot operated, how often it failed, or whether it outperformed alternative methods.
What performance and safety evidence is missing?
The available material supports the intended design, stated payload and shipyard testing or deployment claims. It does not establish independent long-duration reliability, failure rates, uptime, quantified productivity or labor savings, or measured safety benefits. It also does not establish performance across different coatings, corrosion conditions, nonferrous materials or the full range of steel geometries. These are unanswered questions in the cited reporting, not proof that the robot cannot handle them.

What has been reported about price and sales?
Maeil Business Newspaper reported on May 6, 2026, that DIDEN had completed sales to some major shipbuilders and quoted a price range of 100 million to 150 million won per unit, depending on specifications. This is dated newspaper reporting, not a current public price list or verified offer; availability and terms would need to be confirmed with DIDEN. The same report quoted DIDEN CEO Kim Jun-ha estimating the domestic shipbuilding robot market at 130 billion won per year. That figure is the CEO’s market estimate, not an independently validated statistic. Maeil Business Newspaper’s May 2026 report contains the sales, price and market-estimate claims.
