South Korean officials are investigating whether AI agents played a role in recent cyberattacks affecting financial institutions, but President Lee Jae Myung’s reference to “signs” of AI use is not confirmation that AI caused the breaches. As of October 6, 2026, authorities had not identified a confirmed attacker, disclosed the full scale of the incidents, or specified which AI tools may have been involved.
What did President Lee say about AI?
Lee said that “in some hacking cases, details have emerged of the possible use of artificial intelligence (AI), causing the people to feel great concern and anxiety,” according to Yonhap’s October 6 report. The wording indicates possible use in some cases; it does not establish that AI agents carried out every attack or that investigators have confirmed a particular AI system was involved.
Lee also called for a shift from responding after incidents to preventing them. He said, “It is difficult to respond to evolving cyber threats by handling accidents after they happen,” and added, “We must have the security capabilities to detect and block attacks in advance,” Yonhap reported. Lee called for damage to be limited, a swift determination of what happened, and stronger proactive defenses, including cybersecurity AI tailored to counter evolving threats.

Yonhap reported customer-information exposure at seven companies, naming Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, and Shinhan Bank. Reuters also named Shinhan and KB Kookmin, and relayed Yonhap’s reporting that Hana Bank and Woori Bank suffered breaches. The reports describe incidents across multiple financial organizations, but do not provide a settled, complete list of affected institutions.

Aju Press reported that some apparent targets included employee-facing and support systems. That account is reporting about the investigation, not a final official determination that the banks’ core systems were compromised or that every incident followed the same method.
What is known about the investigation?
Yonhap reported that police launched an investigation and assembled a 28-member team to examine suspected violations of South Korea’s information and communications network law. Investigators are looking into whether AI agents automated parts of the attacks, according to Aju Press. Aju Press also reported that officials had not established a single responsible group and that some incidents appeared not to involve AI.

Reuters reported that authorities had not disclosed which AI tools might have been involved or the full scale of the breaches. The investigation therefore remains open: the public reporting does not establish an actor, a definitive role for AI, or a complete account of the affected systems.

How many people may have been affected?
The Record reported on October 6 that at least 68,000 people were exposed across at least seven financial institutions. This is a reported figure attributed to the outlet, not a final official tally; the full breach scale had not been disclosed in Reuters’ account.

Reports also gave different counts of IP addresses associated with the incidents. Reuters said the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) and Financial Security Institute shared data on 28 unique IP addresses with the financial sector. The Record, citing local news reports, gave a count of 33 IP addresses. The available reports do not explain whether the figures use different scopes or reflect different reporting times, so they should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.

The reports describe an investigation into possible AI use, not a measurement of how much AI contributed to the attacks. They do not provide a validated statistic on AI’s role or effectiveness in these specific incidents. The distinction matters: evidence that investigators are checking for AI-assisted activity is not proof that AI agents independently planned or executed a breach.
