South Korean authorities are investigating personal-information breaches affecting bank customers, while officials warn that AI may have been used in some hacking incidents. As of October 6, 2026, regulators had not confirmed that account details usable for financial transactions were exposed. The reported personal-data exposures are real, but the investigation is ongoing and officials have not established AI’s role or the full scale of the incidents.
What happened at South Korean banks?
Yonhap reported on October 4 that personal information belonging to around 25,000 Shinhan Bank customers had been leaked, including names, phone numbers and annual income. It also reported exposure affecting 89 Hana Bank customers. Yonhap said Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank blocked similar attempts without personal-information leakage. Those reports of personal information being exposed should be distinguished from access to information that directly enables a financial transaction. In an October 6 clarification, South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC) said it had not confirmed leakage of account details or other information directly usable for financial transactions in the incidents confirmed to that date. No. AI use is suspected, but public statements cited so far do not establish which tools, if any, were used, how they were used, or the complete scale of the breaches. Reuters reported President Lee Jae Myung telling a cabinet meeting that “In some hacking incidents, signs have emerged of AI being used, causing considerable public concern and anxiety.” The remark describes signs, not a confirmed AI-led campaign or a definitive account of these bank incidents. How can customers reduce the risk of a scam?
Names, phone numbers, addresses or income details can help a scammer make a call or message sound convincing. A caller’s knowledge of personal information does not prove they represent your bank or a government agency. The official warning highlights tailored loan scams, voice phishing and smishing—fraudulent text messages that try to get recipients to click a link or take another unsafe action. - Never disclose your password or authentication code to someone who contacts you.
- Do not transfer money to “protect” an account or pay in advance to obtain a loan or compensation.
- Check an alert or suspected exposure using your bank’s official app or website, or call a customer-service number you find through an official source—not a number or link supplied by the message.
- If you are concerned about exposure, ask your financial institution about available transaction-blocking services. Where applicable, register through the government’s personal-information exposure prevention system.
The consumer guidance says financial authorities and institutions will not ask for passwords or authentication codes by phone or text, demand a transfer to protect an account or arrange compensation, or require an advance payment or app installation for a loan. If you suspect fraud or have already acted on a suspicious message, contact your bank through an official channel promptly to ask about reporting the incident and stopping a transaction; suspected criminal activity can also be reported to police.

What remains unknown?
The investigation is active. The figures reported by Yonhap are not a final consolidated count, and the cited October 6 FSC clarification did not provide one. The full scope and causes of the incidents, whether AI was used and, if so, what role it played, remain unsettled. The most useful distinction for customers is that reported personal-data exposure does not itself establish that account details usable for transactions were exposed.
