A new public weather radar has been selected for a site near Horoirangi Peak at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The announcement is about choosing a location—not a radar that is already built or operating. Its stated purpose is to address a gap in weather-radar coverage.
Where will the new radar be located?
The syndicated listing places the selected site near Horoirangi Peak. It does not provide exact coordinates, so the precise installation point and the communities that would be closest to it are not established. AUSNZNet’s listing also says ministers cited repeated flooding in the region as part of the rationale for the project.
Why is a new radar planned?
The broad aim is to address a weather-radar coverage “black spot” at the top of the South Island, as described in the RNZ story listing. Better radar coverage can help monitor weather systems, but the announcement does not establish that the radar would prevent flooding or eliminate flood risk.

What has—and has not—been announced?
The available listings establish that a site was selected. They do not establish when construction will begin, when the radar will be commissioned, its technical range or coverage footprint, the project cost, or its funding source. They also do not document competing site options or provide full official statements. Palmy Weather’s index displayed the RNZ story on 2 October 2026; that listing does not add those project details.

Until construction and commissioning details are announced, the site selection should not be read as confirmation that the new radar is available for operational forecasting. The locations and weather areas that would gain coverage also remain unspecified.
