Sony has filed a US patent application describing a machine-learning system that uses data from encounters between players and non-player characters (NPCs) to generate NPC content. Bosses that adapt to how you fight are one example the reporting gives. The application is a proposal, though. Nothing in the coverage shows Sony has committed to shipping this on PlayStation, so a boss that learns your habits is a described possibility, not an announced feature.

What the patent application is

The filing is US 2026/0295429 A1, titled “AI-adapted non-player character for video game system.” The applicant is Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. The application was filed on March 31, 2025 and published on October 1, 2026, according to Patentlyze, which reported on it on October 2, 2026. Patentlyze lists the application status as “Waiting for an examiner (Apr 9, 2025).” That is a status snapshot from the source, not a current check of the USPTO record. The official USPTO publication PDF linked from that report could not be opened when this article was prepared, so the wording below comes from Patentlyze’s summary and from GamesRadar+’s account, published October 7, 2026.

How the system is supposed to work

The core idea is a pipeline with three stages: collect data, turn it into model input, and use the model’s output as NPC content.

  1. Collect encounter data. The system gathers player data and video game data from a video game console or video game device. Both describe at least one encounter between an NPC and a player during the execution of a game.
  2. Build model input. The player data and game data are combined into input for a machine-learning model.
  3. Return NPC content. The model produces NPC content, which is then used in the game.

Patentlyze quotes the abstract as stating: “Input data for a machine learning model is generated from the player data and the video game data, and the input data is used to obtain non-player character content from the machine learning model.” The claim text Patentlyze reproduces is cut off mid-sentence in its source, so readers should not treat that excerpt as the complete legal claim.

When the content would be generated

The patent contemplates generating NPC content before gameplay, during execution, or after gameplay, according to GamesRadar+, which quotes the timings as “before game play,” “in real-time,” and “after game play.” Real-time adaptation is therefore one option the filing describes, not the only one. A system that analyses a session afterward and changes content for the next attempt would fit the same description.

Where bosses fit in

Boss fights are the example GamesRadar+ focuses on. The data examples it reports from the patent include:

The content is not limited to combat. Patentlyze’s reporting describes NPC behavior and character attributes, and it also mentions dialogue and appearance. Boss tactics are the most vivid case, but the same mechanism is described for NPCs more broadly.

The design trade-off

GamesRadar+ raises the question of whether a boss that changes its behavior would be harder to learn. An adaptive boss can keep fights responsive, but it can also remove the consistent patterns players rely on to improve. The table below sets out the two sides of that choice. These are editorial implications, not measured results.

Design goal What it offers the player Main risk
Adaptive boss (the patent’s proposal) Fights that respond to the player’s own habits and mistakes Patterns shift, so memorising a fight stops paying off and outcomes can feel arbitrary
Fixed, learnable boss (the common approach in many action games) Predictable patterns that reward practice and let players master a fight Repetition over time, and less variety between attempts

What the filing does not establish

  • It does not show that Sony plans to release this in PlayStation games or on a specific console.
  • It does not give a schedule. Neither source reports any implementation date.
  • GamesRadar+ says there is no indication whether Sony will use the technology at all.
  • It does not show the system working in a released game. The coverage describes a proposed system and does not include testing of it.

A patent application records what an inventor or company asked to protect. Many applications are never built into products, and the published wording can change during examination.

How to read the next developments

If you want to judge whether this moves toward a product, watch for three things: a change in the application’s status on the USPTO record, a Sony statement or game credit that mentions the technology, and a playable build that shows boss behavior changing from one attempt to the next. Until one of those appears, the accurate description is that Sony has a patent application for AI-adapted NPCs, with boss adaptation among the examples it describes.
