The Sony XR-65X90L is a 2023 65-inch 4K full-array LED TV with strong image processing, good brightness and useful 4K/120Hz gaming support. It is a good fit for viewers who sit near the center of the screen and watch a mix of TV, streaming and games. Direct reflections, off-angle viewing, blooming in some dark scenes and less-than-ideal fast-motion gaming are meaningful drawbacks.
What the Sony XR-65X90L offers
Sony lists the XR-65X90L as a 65-inch LCD television, with a 64.5-inch measured diagonal, 3840 × 2160 resolution, direct Full Array LED backlighting, local dimming and a 120Hz panel. It runs Google TV and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. Sony’s US specifications also list 32GB of onboard storage, four HDMI inputs, two USB inputs, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, AirPlay, HomeKit and Chromecast built-in. Regional versions and bundled remote components can differ; check the local Sony support page for the exact market.
Sony describes Google TV on its product page as bringing streaming apps together with personalized recommendations. That is Sony’s description of the platform, not a guarantee that every app is available in every region.
Picture quality: bright and well-processed, with room-dependent limits
RTINGS says it bought and tested the 65-inch model. In its review, the X90L delivered strong SDR brightness, good HDR brightness, vivid and accurate color, and very good upscaling and smoothing of lower-quality content. That processing can be useful for broadcast television, older video and compressed streams.

Room and seating position matter. RTINGS found that direct reflections are difficult to handle and that the image degrades at wider viewing angles. The set is therefore better suited to a central seat and indirect ambient light than to a broad seating arrangement or a screen facing a window or lamp.
Dark scenes also have limitations: RTINGS reports some raised blacks in scenes with bright elements and noticeable blooming around subtitles in some circumstances. Viewers who often watch dark films with subtitles may find those artifacts distracting. How prominent they appear depends on the scene and viewing conditions.

Gaming: 4K/120Hz and VRR, but check the HDMI ports
Sony lists 4K/120Hz input support, variable refresh rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) on HDMI inputs 3 and 4. The TV has four HDMI inputs in total, but those gaming features are not listed for all four. It supports eARC/ARC, and RTINGS notes that one of the two HDMI 2.1-capable inputs is also the eARC port. If you need both a high-bandwidth gaming connection and eARC, plan which devices will use those two inputs.

The frame rate of a stream depends on the content and service. For 4K/120Hz gaming, connect a compatible console or PC to HDMI 3 or 4 and ensure the source is configured to output a supported signal.

RTINGS characterizes gaming as decent overall, but reports higher input lag than similar models and pixel transitions slow enough to blur fast motion. That is a compromise for competitive play, where responsive controls and clear fast movement can matter more than having the headline connection features. For general console gaming, the port support is useful; for competitive gaming, compare tested input response and motion clarity with other options.
Connections and installation
HDMI and source planning
Before connecting devices, identify which require 4K/120Hz, VRR or ALLM and reserve HDMI 3 and 4 for them. Because one of these is also the eARC port, a soundbar or receiver using eARC can limit which high-bandwidth port remains free. Sony lists eARC/ARC; consult the model’s connection documentation and your audio device’s requirements when planning the setup.

Wall mounting and dimensions
Sony USA lists a 300 × 300mm VESA hole pattern. Without the stand, the set measures 1,445 × 831 × 57mm (57 × 32.75 × 2.25 inches) and weighs 24.2kg (53.4lb). Check that the mount matches the VESA pattern and can safely support the TV’s weight, and confirm the wall and hardware are suitable. Stand-position options may vary by regional version. Availability and comparisons
Sony’s US store page currently marks the XR-65X90L as no longer available there. That does not establish whether other retailers have stock. Check live availability and current prices before deciding; no price should be treated as current without verification.

In its review, RTINGS compares the X90L with newer Mini LED models from TCL and Hisense, reporting that those alternatives can provide deeper blacks, more brightness and stronger gaming performance, while Sony retains advantages in processing and accuracy. Those findings are specific to the models and review context, not a universal ranking of every current competitor. When comparing TVs, consider your seating and reflections, dark-scene performance, gaming input response and the quality of your typical video sources.
Verdict
The XR-65X90L makes sense for a viewer who values bright-room performance in indirect light, convincing color and strong cleanup of lower-quality video, and who can sit near the screen’s center. It also supports key current-generation console features, provided the console uses HDMI 3 or 4. It is less compelling for a room with direct reflections, wide seating, frequent dark-subtitled viewing or competitive gaming where fast-motion clarity and low input lag are priorities. Since Sony’s US store lists it as unavailable, weigh any locally available unit against its actual price and newer alternatives rather than assuming it remains a current-value pick.
