The 55-inch Sony XR-55A95K remains a compelling QD-OLED for viewers who prize natural, polished picture quality, vivid highlights and unusually good built-in TV sound. Its age matters, though: it is a 2022 flagship, and its two HDMI 2.1 inputs are reduced to one available gaming input if eARC is used for a soundbar or receiver. It is most attractive when priced meaningfully below newer flagship OLEDs.
What the Sony XR-55A95K is
The XR-55A95K is the 55-inch model in Sony’s 2022 BRAVIA XR A95K series and the company’s first consumer QD-OLED generation. Sony specifies a 54.6-inch diagonal panel. It combines QD-OLED with XR Triluminos Max, XR OLED Contrast Pro and Cognitive Processor XR image processing, and runs Google TV. Sony lists four HDMI inputs in total.

The A95K’s appeal is not simply that it is an OLED. QD-OLED helps it combine OLED contrast with saturated color in bright parts of the image, while Sony’s processing aims for a natural, composed presentation. What Hi-Fi? praised its “supremely natural, authentic picture” and “bright highlights that others miss,” calling it “one of the very best OLED TVs you can buy.” Those are the publication’s review judgments, not a promise that every source, room or picture mode will look identical.

RTINGS also rates the television highly for most uses. Its review tests a 65-inch A95K sample and states that the results apply to the 55-inch model. RTINGS notes that allowing the TV to cool results in higher peak brightness, an indication that heat can affect luminance during testing. No single manufacturer-published numeric peak-brightness figure is established by the cited specifications, so a precise brightness figure would be misleading here. Newer OLED flagships may deliver more brightness, particularly for sustained viewing in a bright room.
For movies and prestige TV in a dim or controlled-light room, the A95K’s contrast, color and processing remain a strong combination. If the room is very bright, compare current models specifically on sustained brightness and reflections rather than assuming that a strong highlight presentation makes this older set the brightest choice.

Gaming: excellent features, limited port flexibility
The A95K supports 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) over HDMI 2.1. That makes it capable of delivering the core high-refresh gaming features expected by PS5 and Xbox Series owners. Sony’s support specifications list those functions; What Hi-Fi?’s review notes the practical catch in the port layout.

If eARC is occupied, only one HDMI 2.1 input remains for a console or PC. A buyer with a PS5, Xbox Series console and gaming PC may need to swap cables, add a compatible HDMI 2.1 switcher, or choose a TV with more conveniently available full-featured inputs. Check that any switcher supports the video formats and refresh rates you intend to use.

What Hi-Fi? considers LG OLED televisions better choices for gaming overall. The A95K is therefore best viewed as a cinema-first flagship that games very well, rather than the automatic pick for someone prioritizing gaming features and port convenience above all else.
Sound and Google TV
What Hi-Fi? lists “excellent sound by TV standards” among the set’s strengths. That can make dialogue and everyday viewing more satisfying than on many thin televisions, though it does not replace a dedicated sound system for buyers seeking room-filling impact or more control over bass.

The built-in Google TV platform provides a mainstream smart-TV interface for streaming without requiring a separate player. App availability and firmware support can change over time, so confirm that the services you use are currently supported on the set before buying a remaining-stock or second-hand unit.

Should you buy the 55-inch A95K?
Consider the A95K if you want Sony’s image processing, natural-looking presentation, colorful highlights and better-than-typical built-in sound, and you can buy it at a substantial discount to newer flagship OLED televisions. Its value depends on the actual price and warranty available where you live; there is no single current market price established here.

Before choosing it over a newer model, compare the sets on the points that affect your own room and equipment:
- Bright-room viewing: compare sustained brightness and handling of reflections, not just peak-highlight claims.
- Gaming connections: count the full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports you can actually use after assigning eARC.
- Gaming behavior: check support and performance for VRR and 4K/120Hz with your consoles or PC.
- Picture preferences: assess accuracy, tone mapping and the color intensity of bright highlights.
- Everyday use: compare built-in sound and the smart-TV platform you expect to use.
- Total value: compare current local price, warranty and availability against newer OLED options.
As a review reference, What Hi-Fi?’s A95K review was published on 4 July 2023. Its praise supports the set’s picture and sound credentials, but the passage of time makes current price, warranty and software support essential parts of a buying decision.
