The Sony XR-55A90J is a 55-inch-class, 4K OLED television from Sony’s 2021 BRAVIA XR MASTER Series. Its official feature set includes Dolby Vision, Google TV, and 4K at 120Hz, but a 2026 buying verdict depends on the set’s local price and condition—and how it compares with televisions currently available. Sony’s specifications establish what it supports, not how it performs in every room or whether a used unit is a good deal.
What the Sony XR-55A90J is
Sony identifies the XR-55A90J as the 55-inch-class A90J, an OLED television with 3840 × 2160 resolution in its 2021 BRAVIA XR MASTER Series. Sony described the A90J at launch as its “best-ever 4K HDR OLED TV”; that was Sony’s own launch-era positioning, not an independent comparative finding. Picture and HDR formats
The panel is OLED and the native resolution is 4K (3840 × 2160), according to Sony’s specification page. Sony lists HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision compatibility. Format support tells you which HDR standards the TV accepts; it does not, on its own, establish peak brightness, highlight detail, color accuracy, near-black handling, or screen uniformity in practice.
HDTVTest published a review on May 2, 2021, based on a retail sample of the 55-inch XR-55A90J. Its description lists evaluation topics including near-black handling, color accuracy, motion, upscaling, screen uniformity, HDR peak brightness, and Dolby Vision. It also discloses retailer sponsorship. The description provides no numeric measurements or detailed results, so it is not enough to substantiate a specific picture-quality verdict. Gaming: 4K 120Hz, VRR, and HDMI ports
Sony lists 4K120, variable refresh rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) among the A90J’s HDMI 2.1 features. The US specification page assigns VRR and ALLM to HDMI 3 and HDMI 4. That port detail matters when connecting a console or PC: check the label and the model’s regional specifications rather than assuming every HDMI input supports every listed feature. Sony also lists eARC, which is useful for sending audio to a compatible receiver or soundbar.
HDTVTest’s review description says its evaluation included gaming, input lag, and 4K120, but the description itself does not give a measured input-lag figure or detailed test result. Consult the review for its attributed observations rather than treating the feature list as a performance test.
Google TV and account requirements
The A90J uses Google TV. Sony lists Google Assistant integration and access to the Google Play Store. Built-in sound and connections
Sony specifies Acoustic Surface Audio+ with two actuators and two subwoofers. Its listed audio output is 20 W + 20 W + 10 W + 10 W, and the set supports Dolby Atmos and eARC/ARC. Those are hardware and format specifications, not evidence of how satisfying the television sounds in a particular room. HDTVTest’s 2021 review description includes sound among its evaluation topics.
Mounting and installation
Sony lists a 300 × 300 mm VESA mounting-hole pattern. Confirm the mount’s weight rating and compatibility with the actual television and installation before purchasing or installing it; the hole pattern alone does not establish that a particular mount is suitable.

There is no responsible universal yes-or-no answer without a current local price, the specific unit’s condition, and a comparison with alternatives available where you live. Sony identifies this as a 2021 model, so a prospective buyer should assess the actual set rather than infer present value or remaining software support from its original specifications.

Before committing, compare the following for the A90J and any current alternative:
- Price and condition: Check the full asking price, seller, warranty or return terms, and whether the set is new, refurbished, or used. Inspect a used unit for panel damage and test its inputs and functions.
- Picture evidence: Compare brightness and highlight behavior using measurements made under comparable methods, alongside near-black detail, uniformity, color accuracy, and processing.
- Gaming connections: Confirm which HDMI ports on the specific regional model support the features you need, and account for the ports already occupied by audio equipment.
- Software expectations: Verify that the apps and account setup you need remain available and that the platform suits your household.
- Audio setup: Consider the built-in speakers alongside any receiver or soundbar you plan to connect over eARC.
HDTVTest’s review description identifies testing areas, but does not supply enough detail by itself to make a quantitative comparison with televisions sold in 2026. Current stock, pricing, firmware, and software-support duration are likewise not established by Sony’s product specifications or that description.
