At the prices reported in the US on October 6, 2026, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is the better deal. Tom’s Guide listed it at $198 and the newer WH-1000XM6 at $378—a $180 difference—and gave its value recommendation to the XM5. The XM6 adds newer wireless and noise-cancelling hardware, but those upgrades are a harder sell at nearly twice the price. These are dated deal prices, not a guarantee that either offer is still available.
Which is the better deal, Sony WH-1000XM6 or WH-1000XM5?
For most shoppers choosing on value, the WH-1000XM5 wins at the reported prices. Tom’s Guide’s October 6, 2026, US deal coverage listed the XM5 for $198, down from $399, and the XM6 for $378, down from $459. The $180 gap buys the XM6’s newer features, not longer official battery life.
Tom’s Guide described both offers as all-time lows seen by its author. That is the publisher’s characterization of the deals at that time, not a promise about future prices or a permanent market record. Check the live listing and final checkout total before deciding.
Price snapshot reported October 6, 2026
| Headphone | Reported Amazon US deal price | Compared with reported list price | Deal verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM5 | $198 | $399 | Stronger value at this snapshot |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | $378 | $459 | Pay more for newer hardware and wireless support |
These figures come from Tom’s Guide’s October 6, 2026 deal report. The report does not establish an offer end time. Amazon listings can also differ by seller: a same-day deal report noted a marketplace seller held the XM5 buy box while Sony’s direct price differed. Confirm the seller, stock, color, return policy, and checkout price rather than assuming the Amazon buy box is sold by Amazon.

Is the XM6 worth paying more for than the XM5?
It can be, if you specifically want Sony’s newer noise-cancelling and call hardware or the XM6’s added Bluetooth support, and those features justify the premium to you. Sony says the XM6 uses its QN3 processor, which is seven times faster than the XM5’s QN1, and that it processes input from 12 microphones in real time. Those are Sony’s manufacturer claims; they do not establish a measured percentage improvement in noise cancellation or call quality.
Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 and SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 support for the XM6. The XM5 is listed with Bluetooth 5.2 and SBC, AAC, and LDAC. LC3 and the newer Bluetooth version may matter in a compatible setup, but a benefit depends on the source device and its implementation; the specification alone does not mean every phone or computer will sound better.

How much better is XM6 noise cancelling?
The available evidence supports saying that the XM6 has newer noise-cancelling hardware, not quantifying how much better it performs in everyday use. Sony’s May 16, 2025 launch release says the QN3 processor is seven times faster than the XM5’s QN1 and manages 12 microphones in real time. Processor speed and microphone count describe the system; they are not an independently measured noise-reduction result.

If better noise cancelling is the main reason you are considering the XM6, weigh that potential upgrade against the $180 dated price gap and look for a return window that lets you assess fit and performance for yourself. Neither the cited deal report nor Sony’s stated hardware claims provide a controlled, directly comparable test result.

Yes, Sony rates both for up to 30 hours of music playback with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off. These are Sony’s published maximum playback figures, not guarantees of the time every listener will get. The XM6’s newer processor and microphone system do not change the official battery ratings shown in Sony’s specifications.

Which one should you buy?
- Choose the WH-1000XM5 if the dated $198 offer is still live from a seller and under terms you are comfortable with, and your priority is spending less for the same official battery ratings.
- Choose the WH-1000XM6 if you want its newer QN3/microphone system or LC3 support and are willing to pay more for those specific features.
- Check fit before committing if you have larger ears or are unsure about comfort. Tom’s Guide’s deal coverage suggests some buyers with larger ears might prefer the XM5, but that is reviewer guidance rather than a fit guarantee; use the retailer’s return terms to manage uncertainty.
