Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want Sony’s newer noise-canceling processor and expanded microphone system. Choose the WH-1000XM5 if it costs substantially less where you shop and those upgrades are not worth the premium to you. Sony lists the same maximum music playback time for both, so battery life does not separate them on paper.
What is different between the Sony WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000XM5?
The most substantial documented change is the XM6’s noise-canceling hardware. Sony’s May 15, 2025 UK announcement says the XM6 uses its HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3 and 12 microphones, compared with eight microphones in the XM5. Sony also says QN3 processes seven times faster than its predecessor. Those are Sony’s descriptions of the hardware—not independent measurements of how much better the headphones sound or cancel noise.
Sony characterizes the change as “a dramatic leap in noise cancelling and sound quality.” That is the company’s claim, not a comparative test result. The official announcement is at Sony UK’s WH-1000XM6 launch release.

The listed weight difference is small and does not establish which model will feel more comfortable. Which model should you buy?
Choose the WH-1000XM6 if the newer hardware matters to you
The XM6 is the straightforward pick if you want Sony’s current generation of noise-canceling hardware: the QN3 processor and 12-microphone system. Sony’s official specifications also list Bluetooth 5.3 and LC3 for this model. The available official information establishes those specifications, but does not independently quantify the audible improvement in noise cancellation, sound, or calls over the XM5.
Choose the WH-1000XM5 if the lower price wins
The XM5 remains a sensible option if you find it at a meaningful discount and would rather save than pay extra for the XM6’s documented hardware changes. It has the same Sony-rated maximum music playback time, and its listed weight is fractionally lower. Neither fact alone establishes a comfort or performance advantage.

Check the price where you will actually buy
On Sony’s US store listing accessed October 4, 2026, the XM6 was displayed at $459.99 and the XM5 at $299.99. These are dated US Sony-store prices, not Amazon prices or guaranteed current prices; retailer pricing and availability can change.
