Choose the Sony WH-1000XM5 if you want the newer model and its updated noise-canceling design; choose the WH-1000XM4 if it costs less and its listed features meet your needs. Sony’s published battery maximums are nearly identical with noise canceling on, and the available product claims do not establish that the XM5 is a universal listening or noise-canceling winner.

The numbers come from Sony’s U.S. model specification pages, which do not state a publication year. Treat the battery figures as stated maximums: actual runtime is not established by those pages. The Bluetooth version difference alone does not prove that one headset will sound better or maintain a better connection in your setup.

Choose the WH-1000XM5 if its newer noise-canceling design matters to you
Sony’s May 12, 2022 announcement says the XM5 uses two processors to control eight microphones and describes the system as especially reducing mid- to high-frequency noise. Sony also describes an Auto NC Optimizer that adjusts noise cancellation according to the environment. Choose the WH-1000XM4 if it is cheaper and fits your requirements
The XM4 remains a reasonable choice when its current price is lower and you are comfortable with its listed specifications. Sony lists the same codecs as for the XM5 and the same maximum battery life with noise canceling on. Whether the XM4 is the better value depends on the prices and availability where you are buying; no live listings or prices are established here.
Battery life: the published maximums are close
Sony lists up to 30 hours for either model with noise canceling on. With noise canceling off, Sony lists up to 40 hours for the XM5 and up to 38 hours for the XM4. These are model-specific maximums on Sony’s undated U.S. specification pages, not independently measured results, so they should not be read as guaranteed everyday runtimes.

Bluetooth and codecs: what the spec difference means
Sony lists Bluetooth 5.2 for the XM5 and Bluetooth 5.0 for the XM4. Both specification pages list SBC, AAC, and LDAC. The version numbers document a difference in the published specifications, but they do not by themselves establish a noticeable improvement in sound or connection reliability. Device compatibility and the conditions in which you use the headphones also matter.
Using the headphones with two devices
Sony describes multipoint as switching between two audio sources and specifies a two-device limit. Its support instructions cover the XM5 and refer to the XM4 in example instructions, so check the guidance for your model and connected devices rather than assuming every setup behaves identically. Check the price before deciding
No current retail price, discount, or stock status is established here. Compare the live price of each model from retailers serving your region, and consider the premium for the XM5 against the features you will actually use. If there is little price difference, the newer model may be the more appealing choice; if the XM4 is substantially less expensive and meets your needs, the savings may matter more than the specification differences.
