Choose the Sony WH-1000XM5 if LDAC support and Sony’s documented codec options matter to you; consider the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want Bose’s Immersive Audio modes and the comparative reviewer preference reported by RTINGS. The battery figures are broadly similar in standard listening modes, and neither manufacturer’s specifications establish a universal winner for noise cancellation, fit, or comfort. This comparison is specifically about Bose’s second-generation QuietComfort Ultra, introduced in 2025—not the first-generation model.
Which models are being compared?
This comparison covers Sony WH-1000XM5 over-ear noise-cancelling headphones and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Bose’s official product and support materials distinguish the 2025 second-generation model from the original QuietComfort Ultra, so check the product listing carefully if you shop: the generation affects which specifications apply. Bose identifies the second-generation model on its product page; Sony’s US specifications describe the WH-1000XM5. Sony WH-1000XM5 specifications

Which one has better noise cancelling?
RTINGS’ side-by-side comparison result favors Bose overall, but the available comparison result does not provide detailed methodology or comparable numerical noise-cancellation measurements. Treat that as a reviewer’s overall assessment, not proof that Bose will cancel more noise for every listener or in every setting. Over-ear noise cancelling depends in part on how well the earcups seal around your ears; glasses, head shape, and fit can affect an individual experience.
#1 Best Overall
- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
If possible, try both with the kinds of sounds you want to reduce—such as steady travel noise or a busy office—and check how well each seals without uncomfortable pressure. Manufacturer specifications alone do not settle which will perform better for you.
How do the battery-life claims compare?
Sony states up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off. Bose states up to 30 hours of playback for the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra, up to 23 hours with Immersive Audio on, and up to 45 hours with ANC off. These are each manufacturer’s stated figures, not results from a controlled, head-to-head battery test.

The closest like-for-like comparison in the stated figures is 30 hours with noise cancelling on for Sony versus Bose’s up-to-30-hour standard playback claim. Bose’s 23-hour Immersive Audio figure describes a different listening mode, so it should not be treated as directly equivalent to Sony’s standard figure. For listening without ANC, Bose states a higher maximum—45 hours versus Sony’s 40—but actual battery life can vary with settings and use.

Choose Sony if LDAC fits your setup
Sony lists SBC, AAC, and LDAC support. LDAC is a reason to consider the WH-1000XM5 if your playback device and listening setup support it and you specifically want to use that codec. Verify compatibility on the phone or computer you plan to use; a headphone’s codec support alone does not ensure your source will transmit in that format.

Both support multipoint connections
Sony lists multipoint, while Bose says the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra can connect to two source devices at once. That can be useful when switching between, for example, a computer and a phone. Bose specifies two devices on its product information; check the manufacturers’ current device instructions for the connection and switching behavior you need. What about fit, comfort, and wired use?
The cited evidence does not establish a reliable universal comfort ranking. Comfort varies with head shape, glasses, heat, and the pressure of the headband and earcups. If you wear headphones for long sessions, try both if practical, paying attention to pressure and heat after more than a few minutes rather than judging only by a quick fit check.

Which headphones should you buy?
- Consider the Sony WH-1000XM5 if your decision turns on its explicitly listed SBC, AAC, and LDAC support, or if passive wired use is useful to you.
- Consider the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if you want Bose’s Immersive Audio option or give weight to RTINGS’ overall preference for Bose in its side-by-side comparison.
- Try both before deciding if comfort, seal, or noise cancellation is your main concern; the available evidence does not establish a universal winner on those points.
- Compare current local prices before buying. No current regional price or stock comparison is established here, and a sale price can change which model offers better value.
Before ordering Bose, verify that the listing explicitly identifies the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. Then weigh actual fit, the modes and connectivity you will use, and the price available in your region.
