If you were considering AirPods Max, Sony’s WH-1000XM5 is the premium rival to compare: October 2026 Prime Day coverage put the Sony at $198 on Amazon, close to the $199 in the original headline. Tom’s Guide calls the XM5 the better noise-cancelling alternative, while AirPods Max 2 was listed at $429. Those are reported deal prices, not guaranteed live prices; check Amazon for current price, stock and Prime eligibility.
What the Prime Day prices actually tell you
Tom’s Guide’s October 5, 2026, deal roundup and WIRED’s October 7, 2026, roundup both reported the Sony WH-1000XM5 at $198 on Amazon. The $199 headline figure is therefore a near-match, not the price reported by those sources. Their coverage also listed AirPods Max 2 at $429. Macworld reported the same October price and noted that AirPods Max 2 had reached $399 during June 2026 Prime Day.
These are dated U.S. deal reports, not a promise that the offers remain available. The $399 figure is a previous June low, not the October price. Retailer price, stock, color availability and Prime eligibility can change, so confirm the listing before buying.

| What matters | Sony WH-1000XM5 | Apple AirPods Max 2 |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 reported deal price | $198 on Amazon, reported by Tom’s Guide and WIRED | $429 on Amazon, reported by Tom’s Guide and Macworld |
| Noise cancellation | Tom’s Guide identifies it as the better ANC alternative; WIRED also describes its noise cancellation positively. These are publication assessments, not a head-to-head test for this article. | Apple’s March 2026 update added an H2 chip and improved noise cancellation, according to Macworld. The cited deal coverage does not establish a direct ANC comparison with the XM5. |
| Sound quality | WIRED describes the XM5’s sound positively; this is its reviewer assessment. | Not stated for AirPods Max 2 in the cited deal coverage. |
| Weight and comfort | Not stated in the cited October deal coverage. | Not stated for AirPods Max 2 in the cited October deal coverage. |
| Battery life with ANC on | Not stated in the cited October deal coverage. | Not stated for AirPods Max 2 in the cited October deal coverage. |
TechRadar’s September 21, 2026, comparison table lists the original AirPods Max—not Max 2—at 386 g and 20 hours of battery life with ANC on. Those figures should not be carried over to the newer generation. The cited October deal reports do not provide comparable Sony figures, either.

Is the WH-1000XM5 worth buying at about $199?
If your priority is strong noise cancellation for substantially less than the reported AirPods Max 2 deal price, the XM5 is the clearer value on these October listings. Tom’s Guide calls it the better ANC alternative and says it remains worthwhile despite the newer WH-1000XM6. WIRED also describes the XM5 as a strong performer for noise cancellation and sound. Those judgments belong to the publications; they are not results from a new side-by-side test.
The XM5 has been superseded in Sony’s lineup: Tom’s Guide notes the WH-1000XM6, while WIRED says the XM6 and XM4C have largely replaced the XM5. That context helps explain why the older model may be discounted, but the deal coverage does not establish that the XM5 is the right fit for every listener. Check the current price of the newer models if you want the latest generation.

When AirPods Max 2 may justify its higher price
AirPods Max 2 is the current Apple generation discussed in the October 2026 deal coverage. Macworld says Apple updated it in March 2026 with an H2 chip and improved noise cancellation. At the reported $429 October price, it costs $231 more than the XM5’s reported $198 price. Whether that difference is worthwhile depends on what you value; the cited deal roundups do not establish a universal winner or provide a controlled comparison of sound, comfort, battery life or device integration.
If you already use Apple devices, check Apple’s current compatibility and feature documentation for the specific devices and software versions you own. The deal coverage does not supply a verified feature-by-feature ecosystem comparison, so it cannot support a blanket claim that one model integrates better for every buyer.

What to verify before placing an order
- Confirm that the listing is for the Sony WH-1000XM5, not the WH-1000XM6 or another model.
- Check the live price, seller, stock, color and Prime eligibility; the $198 Sony and $429 AirPods Max 2 figures were reported for October 2026.
- For an Apple-versus-Sony decision, compare the features you will actually use on your own devices rather than assuming ecosystem advantages from brand alone.
- Do not use original AirPods Max specifications as if they described AirPods Max 2.
For another premium sound-focused option, Tom’s Guide listed the Bowers & Wilkins Px8 S2 at $479 in its October 5 coverage and praised its sound, design and build. That is a separate reviewer assessment and a higher reported deal price; it is not evidence that it beats either Sony or Apple overall.
