In deal coverage published October 6, 2026, the Sony WH-1000XM5 was reported at $198 on Amazon and the newer WH-1000XM6 at $378. At those reported prices, the XM5 is the stronger value for most buyers; the XM6 costs $180 more for newer processing and connectivity. These are dated offers, not guaranteed live prices, and the XM5’s reported Amazon buy box was held by marketplace seller Focus Camera LLC.
How the reported prices compare
| Model | Reported price | Price context |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM5 | $198 | Tom’s Guide reported this price on October 6, 2026. TechRadar separately described $198 as 50% off MSRP during early Prime Day Big Deals coverage. Digital Citizen reported that marketplace seller Focus Camera LLC, rather than Amazon itself, held the buy box. Tom’s Guide; TechRadar |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | $378 | Tom’s Guide reported this price on October 6, 2026. Sony’s US product FAQ lists an MSRP of $459.99 and warns that promotions and prices may change. Tom’s Guide; Sony Electronics |
Check the current product page before buying: the price, stock, seller, shipping, and any Prime eligibility can change. In particular, the reported $198 XM5 price should not be taken to mean Amazon was the seller or that the offer was restricted to Prime members.
What the extra $180 buys with the XM6
Sony lists the WH-1000XM6 with Bluetooth 5.3 and support for SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. The WH-1000XM5 uses Bluetooth 5.2 and supports SBC, AAC, and LDAC. LC3 and the newer Bluetooth version may matter if your devices and listening setup support them, but the published specifications alone do not establish how much difference you will hear in everyday use. Sony says the XM6’s QN3 processor optimizes its 12 microphones and is seven times faster than the XM5’s QN1. That is a manufacturer comparison of processor speed, not a claim that noise cancellation or call quality is seven times better. If having Sony’s newer processing generation is a priority, the XM6 is the reason to pay more.

Battery life does not separate them on Sony’s ratings
Sony rates both headphones for up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling on, or up to 40 hours with it off. These are manufacturer figures; actual runtime varies with settings, conditions, and use. On Sony’s published battery ratings, the XM6 does not provide a longer stated runtime to offset its higher reported price. XM5 specifications; XM6 specifications
Which one should you buy?
Choose the WH-1000XM5 at $198 if value is the priority
- You want the lower reported price and do not need the XM6’s newer Bluetooth and LC3 support.
- You are comfortable checking the live listing’s seller and terms, since the reported XM5 buy box was held by a marketplace seller.
- You are comparing battery ratings: Sony publishes the same up-to-30-hour ANC-on and up-to-40-hour ANC-off figures for both models.
Consider the WH-1000XM6 at $378 if newer features matter more than price
- You specifically want its QN3 processor generation, Bluetooth 5.3, or LC3 support.
- You consider those newer features worth the $180 difference between the prices reported by Tom’s Guide on October 6, 2026.
At the reported prices, Tom’s Guide also judged the XM5 the better value. That conclusion is price-specific: a different live price gap, or a strong preference for the XM6’s newer feature set, can change which purchase makes sense.
