Sony announced the WF-1000XM6 on 12 February 2026, so the question of whether it would arrive in 2025 is settled: it did not. Sony’s launch materials outline changes to noise cancellation, microphones and fit, but their performance claims should not be mistaken for independent test results.
When did Sony announce the WF-1000XM6?
Sony introduced the WF-1000XM6 on 12 February 2026. The 2025 release speculation was not borne out; Sony’s announcement is the definitive update, rather than evidence of a launch delay or an explanation for it. Sony’s US support page also lists the model and its support materials.
What did Sony say changed from the WF-1000XM5?
The WF-1000XM5 is the predecessor; What Hi-Fi? reported that it launched in 2023. Sony’s announcement describes several changes for the XM6, but the available information here does not establish which model is the better buy in independent comparative testing.

Sony claims the XM6 delivers a 25% improvement in noise reduction over the WF-1000XM5. The company’s comparison footnote refers to ranking and research as of 1 December 2025. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result reported in the launch release.

Microphones and voice pickup
Sony says each XM6 earbud has four microphones, up from three on the XM5, and identifies its QN3e processor and Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimiser as part of the noise-cancellation system. For voice pickup, Sony describes two microphones and a bone-conduction sensor per side. These specifications do not, by themselves, establish call quality in real-world use.
Fit and audio features
Sony says the earbuds have a redesigned shape and include Noise Isolation Earbud Tips in four sizes. Fit and comfort vary by ear; the listed details do not establish that third-party replacement tips will fit or work properly. Sony also lists Hi-Res Audio Wireless, DSEE Extreme, head tracking and a customizable 10-band equalizer in its Sony Sound Connect app.

What were the launch price and colors?
Sony’s European launch release specified Black and Platinum Silver, availability from February 2026, and a suggested retail price of €300. That is a Europe-specific launch MSRP, not a current transaction price or a price for every market. The cited materials do not establish current local pricing, stock or retailer offers.
What should WF-1000XM5 owners consider?
The announcement gives XM5 owners a basis for comparing Sony’s stated changes, but not enough evidence for a definitive upgrade recommendation. Before choosing between generations, compare current prices in your region and consider the features you will use, your fit preferences and the return policy. Sony’s 25% noise-reduction figure is a claim to assess alongside independent testing, not a substitute for it.
