Sony’s latest flagship upgrades are split across two products: the WF-1000XM6 true wireless earbuds, announced on February 12, 2026, and the WH-1000XM6 over-ear headphones, announced on May 15, 2025. The earbuds focus on stronger noise cancelling, a slimmer design and clearer calls; the headphones add faster noise-cancelling hardware, travel-friendly features and a folding redesign. Sony’s performance figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results.
What is new about the Sony WF-1000XM6?
The WF-1000XM6 upgrades the WF-1000XM5’s noise-cancelling system, call hardware and fit. Sony says it reduces noise 25% further than the XM5. The earbuds now have four microphones per earbud instead of three, a QN3e noise-cancelling processor and adaptive optimisation that adjusts cancellation to the wearer and surroundings. Sony also says the body is approximately 11% slimmer.
Those changes are most relevant on public transport, in busy offices and anywhere background sound shifts during the day. A smaller body may help with fit, but comfort depends on the listener’s ears and tip choice; the product announcement does not establish that every wearer will find it more comfortable.

Sound, calls and wireless features
Sony lists 32-bit processing and a redesigned driver for the XM6. For calls, AI beamforming works with bone-conduction sensors to help separate the speaker’s voice from surrounding sound. The antenna is 1.5 times larger than the predecessor’s, according to Sony. The earbuds are also described as LE Audio-ready; that wording does not guarantee that every phone, app or service supports the feature.

Sony rates battery life at up to eight hours per charge and up to 24 hours with the charging case. These are manufacturer-stated maximums, not a guarantee of runtime in every listening mode or volume level.
What changed in the Sony WH-1000XM6?
The WH-1000XM6 uses Sony’s QN3 noise-cancelling processor and 12 microphones. Sony says the processor is seven times faster than the predecessor’s and the microphone count is 1.5 times that of the WH-1000XM5. The system is designed for adaptive, real-time cancellation, a benefit aimed at changing noise in transport, offices and other shared spaces.

Listening and travel features
The over-ear model adds studio collaboration features and 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema, along with scene-based listening. It supports LE Audio and Auracast, as well as multipoint and auto switch. Actual access to LE Audio or Auracast depends on compatible source devices and services.

Should you upgrade from the XM5 or choose earbuds versus headphones?
Consider the WF-1000XM6 if
- You want pocketable noise cancelling and prefer in-ear headphones for commuting or travel.
- Call clarity and a slimmer earbud body matter, and the added microphones and voice pickup system address your needs.
- You are upgrading from WF-1000XM5 and value Sony’s claimed further noise reduction, revised processing and updated call hardware enough to justify the new model.
Consider the WH-1000XM6 if
- You prefer an over-ear fit, or want a folding design for carrying headphones in a bag.
- You value long stated playback time, quick-charge claims, multipoint and auto switch for work and travel.
- You want the listed cinema upmix and studio collaboration features rather than an earbud-first form factor.
The releases establish the changes Sony is making, but do not provide independent head-to-head measurements of noise cancelling, sound quality, comfort or call performance. An XM5 owner should therefore treat percentage and speed claims as Sony’s comparisons, not proof that the difference will be equally noticeable in every setting.
How much do the Sony XM6 earbuds and headphones cost?
At launch, Sony Europe listed the WF-1000XM6 at €300, while Sony UK listed it at £250 in its 2026 release. For the WH-1000XM6, Sony announced £400/€450 in Europe and $449.99 in the US in 2025. These are launch prices in their respective markets; current retail prices, stock and promotions may differ by country and date.
Colors and materials
Sony’s XM6 range includes Sand Pink and, later, Sandstone among its expanded color options. The sustainability statements differ by product and announcement: Sony says the WF-1000XM6 uses approximately 25% circular material in its plastics and has plastic-free packaging. Sony’s 2025 WH-1000XM6 announcement describes its packaging as 100% paper. The approximately 25% recycled-plastic and plastic-free-packaging claim in Sony’s 2026 Collexion announcement applies to that collection and should not be treated as a general XM6 specification.
